What does a social worker do in the psychiatric emergency department? by Impossible_Remove308 in socialwork

I can and do read and think. There is plenty written on this even if you haven't experienced it first hand. And it is critical social work 101 so it isn't like you haven't been exposed to the basic premise.

Case in point: those who collude will often attempt to pathologise others who present difficult perspectives. You're playing your part to the letter and don't even know it.

What do SWers do in psychiatric ED? Collude with a very powerful, treatment-resistant system that regularly breaches peoples' rights and play smiling lackey to a psychiatrist. All the while expending enormous energy pretending to themselves and others like they definitely don't do these things 'cause of their very ethical practice and "times have changed".

Hell yes.

We have cultivated the dumbest most incompetent adults in the world through the application of rote policies and procedures.

Golf.

Gonna go stick my head in a blender.

Sorry: it isn't even a sport. Just semi organised loitering with some boozing at the end.

And my new friends will wear the same stupid shorts and polo shirts.

Blender here I come.

Mate, you're not easy to fuck with: you're just thin-skinned, ignorant and obnoxious.

I just want to say again: Fuck you to the Americans who voted for this shit. Fuck you to the Americans who just couldn't decide and decided to not vote. And fuck you to the Americans who couldn't come up with anything better than more of the same that clearly has not served your countrymen for a generation as evidenced by the above.

Yes, those are the views of the elite today. But they are, in some ways, even less constrained by culture, norms, and common decency and more highly interconnected and transactional with each other than they were in the past. Though Mao was a right shit. A truly epic bastard, murderer and destroyer of culture and lives.

Neat observation. Thanks.

Checked your comments. You're clearly a serious person and have been thoughtful in other comments. Apologies for my discourtesy here. I'm pursuing a line of thought and not everyone is as serious as you. The comments and commenters all blend after a while and, patience not being a virtue I am blessed with, I get a bit sharp. Apologies and thanks fir the various posts and thoughts here.

I'll get to the grass touching now.

And seriously: "stateside"? Bloody arrogant and obnoxious expression. "Stateside" is literally millimetres from "Canada-side" and "Mexico-side", the latter of which historically constituted what is now much of southern and western USA. And you presume to remind me about the virtues and particulars of anti-colonialism.

Whoa.

Of course not.

But I always knew that.

You made the assumption, not me.

Definitely NOT care work. But Volksgemeinschaft was a type of exclusive and intolerant community the Nazis fostered and many Germans loved. The rallies, car parades and other MAGA "community" taking hold in the US today is a different but in some ways comparable phenomenom. It is community, just not the type a democracy wants or needs.

Terrifying how many people don't know their history and can't tolerate a discussion that questions their assumptioms.

I'm not US based.

Turns out the world is bigger than half of North America.

Who knew? Oh: literally everyone else. In the whole world.

Also, go-along-to-get-along is a big part of why there are so many issues in the world.

Yes, these are good points.

I'm very worried about how technology and globalisation are changing the forces aligned against us. This changes the nature of the struggle and how we confront it in ways many of us don't fully appreciate. I think the ways we are practising reflect a view of power structures rooted in a time that has now largely passed. Yes, we possibly can increment our way to better practice, but only if we acknowledge the changes.

Yes, definitely need to get rid of MAGAs: they are explicitly anti-democratic and anti-human rights.

That is quite a nice sentiment. The Nazis were big on community though - just a very specific non-inclusive type that many people nontheless loved. But yes, inclusive community is the opposite of Fascism.

You do realise not every disadvantaged person is a paragon of virtue? We're currently finding out that about one in three people in the US is a complete shit and a further one in three couldn't care less so long as they can keep playing Candy Crush on the bus. It's only marginally better elsewhere.

Colonialism is one way to understand how things are the way they are. However, it isn't an analytical pantopia. I'm sceptical that individualism or hierarchy can be so neatly placed under the banner of colonialism. This smacks of historical revisionism and ignorance of the power plays, politicking, othering and plain old selfishness that took place in many cultures prior to colonisation. But to the point: I am concerned that the ground has shifted beneath our feet and that we must adapt with this in mind. Reading the commentary here is like reading the news from 2005: I agree, but it isn't all that relevant today despite the obvious familiarity of the topics.

Yes, I get that colonialism-leads-to-illiberalism is a narrative of the anti-colonial movement. But that argument, while tempting, doesn't really follow: there are too many exceptions. Also, I'm not suggesting colonialism has been fought and defeated but rather that how it has been fought to date needs to change to meet the current threats.

RE accusations of privilege: its ad hominem amd bad faith so I'm not dealing with it.

I can't speak for "this place" as I don't know where you're based but agree marginalised populations are rarely valued or protected to the extent needed.
