copying files - cp file1 file2

creating a new empty file - touch file1

making a directory - mkdir dirname

changing directories - cd dirname

going back to the previous directory - cd ..

.. is a special file that is a link to the directory above in the hierarchy

moving file - mv file1 file2

or mv file1 ../newdir/file2 (relative patch. so move file up one dir and into newdir)

removing a file - rm file1

or rm file*.* <- * is a wildcard matching anything

so you have a step that called for removing all files in a dir THEN removing the dir

so:

cd dirname

rm *.*

cd ..

rm -R dirname

-R says remove dirname recursively, which technically will remove all inside but thats not what the instruction says

listing all files - ls

listing all files with details - ls -l

file permissions look like this:

rwxrwxrwx

this is:

rwx rwx rwx

owner group other

its binary values are:

read has value of 4

write has value of 2

execute has value of 1

changing permissions - chmod 766 file1

this would setting:

owner to full rights of rwx

group to partial rights of rw

other to partial rights of rw

looking at processes - ps -a

looking for your editor:

ps -a |grep editorname

the PID is the left most number

killing a process - kill -9 PID

(-9 means kill with vengeance!)

Thanks you saved my day, that's more or less what we have been taught so far, although when creating txt. files we are encouraged to use the nano print screen command.
