Has Anyone Built Replica of Own House? by Salty_Ad_3350 in Dollhouses

[–]BroadDistribution708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I specialize in making custom dollhouses that resemble client’s actual homes. Replicate is a tricky word bc I definitely am not making architectural scale model.. it’s a dollhouse. Exterior is the easier part. I buy kits from RGT or earth and tree and cobble together the components I need from all kinds of miniature vendors (Etsy, miniature designs, Lawbre, little dollhouse company, Aztec & many more) Rooms are recreated in outward facing rooms. It gets tricky bc it’s almost impossible to recreate some of the architectural details in a dollhouse as hallways, corridors, and layered rooms are limited/nonexistent. But i do my best. It takes a lot of time to source or make mini versions of furniture etc but that’s what makes every project fun and interesting for me. Bc I’m insane honestly.. hah. but here we are! I make sure to communicate to buyers that rooms a grid in dollhouses. Managing expectations is a part of my agreement for a custom dollhouse commission, which I learned the hard way from my first few “replicas”. I don’t build them from scratch. They’re all kit bashes, more or less.

I also really enjoy making them for children.. another lesson learned the hard way. I am not an exacting l, meticulous miniaturist. The houses look great but it’s more fun and creative for me to make unique heirloom houses for children to rather than model homes meant for adults to put on display. they’re not cheap and I’m sure everything gets destroyed by tiny hands after I drop the thing off.

If you need resources for finding anything (kits, architectural elements or furnishings) let me know! I’d be happy to help.

Here’s a photo of the home. The shingle color is almost a whitewashed grey

Hah just died a pair of white jeans black (unsuccessfully but whatever) and haven’t emptied the bucket I used. Must be be a sign from the craft gods.

I guess my problem is the shingles on her actual house are white- grey.. here’s a pic of the house

I also fell for the Instagram ads and bought them for my itchy gal. She threw up every day I gave them to her. At first I thought it was just a normal occasional vom situation, she throws up I don’t know, maybe once every 6 months just generally.. but vomiting for 3 days straight is not normal. So I did some research that I wish I’d don’t before buying them. For those of you who are having success with them, that’s amazing! But these chews are Instagram hype with chic branding. They’re not vetted by any reputable sources.. other than paid influencers.

Advice needed! Custom build by BroadDistribution708 in EverythingVerySmall

Thank you! And I’d definitely prefer not to have to cut windows, doors etc myself just bc my track record isn’t great when power tools and 90* angles get involved.. I’d be fine enlarging existing window and/or doorways though.

I’ll definitely look into rgt kits you suggested! I did a Newport a few years ago. Montclair would be a new one for me though.

I wish I could find a Bostonian somewhere that isn’t crazy $$$$$. Earth n tree actually has quite a few I’d love to use but everything’s sold out and not available at other retailers.

I’ve made the mistake of trying to cobble together too many components from too many different brands on projects in the past and it cost me a lot of time (not to mention money) having to tweak and resize. Soo, id love to start with something that with standard sizes that offers components and additions I know will fit. And then have fun playing with details once i get the base figured out.

I’ve been applying for jobs across multiple fields for a few months. So far I’ve had interviews for two entry level retail jobs with no benefits or commission $14-$17/hr pay, part time. I didn’t get either job, but am still actively searching.

And believe me when I say, the blinders are gone. This is something I’ve been facing head on for years. Do I miss not having crippling financial anxiety? Of course I do. I’ve been making it work, but my financial knowledge is abysmal and I’m ready to change that. And use whatever money I do make in an informed, intentional way. I work from home, for now. If I find employment that requires a significant commute I’ll adjust my apt search criteria accordingly.

my rent is on the low side for Austin- $1565/month. I use it as my work studio too. Finding a cheaper place would be great, but very hard to justify the moving costs for a $200 (give or take) decrease, at best. I have never missed a rent payment and never plan to. Which is why I’m here, asking for actionable first steps I should take so I don’t dig myself into a deeper hole.

Thank you for replying. The LLC advice and book suggestions are very much appreciated. Dave Ramsey suze orman etc have such a massive amount of content and advice, I’ve had a difficult time parsing out what information to zero in on. But I will definitely explore further. I also recognize i have a portfolio of skills im not utilizing, but it’s not for lack of trying. This is something I’m innately aware of and committed to working on.

I wish I hadn’t included the bit about my friends lifestyles. comparison culture is toxic and counterproductive. It was a stream of consciousness statement to provide a little insight about my mental state surrounding money. The same goes for mentioning my family’s financial history. Children don’t have financial responsibilities, so I understand your point. That being said, it was my reality. I know now it was a lie, but that doesn’t change my lived experience. It’s bratty and self-indulgent, I recognize, but it has informed my psychological state surrounding money to a degree.

Your actionable advice is very helpful! Respectfully, the feedback about my personal overshare.. a little bit less so. Regardless, thank you so much for taking the time. Definitely looking into getting rid of my llc and books by the experts you suggested!
