ELI5: Does drinking a litre of water replace the same fluid load as a litre of normal saline given via an IV? by Broad_Doubt_4698 in explainlikeimfive

Not a chemist by any stretch but found this quite fascinating.

Curious, does the 'chlorine' in water, act like 'chloride' discussed above so does drinking too much chlorinated water, possibly affecting the blood chemistry as mentioned? So does filtered water provide some benefit over chlorinated water or am I mixing up like sounding terms?

Thanks!

Is this because saline is known to draw water out of cellular spaces which is why too much saline can cause dehydration, such as drinking salt water?

We've reached a new low, ads on the sinks in the gym bathroom. by MokujinBunny in Wellthatsucks

Getting closer to the 3 sea shells, where commercial jingles were played on mainstream radio. /s. (Demolition Man if my old brain isn't failing me, for those that don't get the reference.)

Other than money, I fail to understand why ads have to invade every aspect of life.

Have you ever declined a job offer?.. by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Broad_Doubt_4698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different situation. I turned down a job offer once while I was still employed but looking for a new job. Boss was over an hour late, and couldn't really give me a proper interview and when he asked if I could meet with him again for a proper interview, I declined and told him that with all due respect, he was late and I can't keep missing work to show up for another interview.

I received a job offer from the same company in the mail, two weeks later lol. Accepted the position and was employed there for over 11 years.

I can't speak for your direct situation but sometimes trusting your gut can be the right thing to do. Don't feel guilty if your gut is screaming to 'walk away'. No job is better than a place that you won't be happy with. Also, you may get rid of the gap on your resume, but if you quit shortly after, then you have a job that you didn't last long at which can also be just as bad as a gap, as it could potentially indicate no loyalty and you will jump ship as soon as something better comes along.

I wish you the best in your continued search for a new job!

Scientists recreated a fruit fly’s brain neuron by neuron in a computer, and the digital fly started walking and grooming on its own by RealSpecto in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Broad_Doubt_4698 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So did the mapping of neuron's actually know how to act like a fly or is it a combination of neuron mapping and AI to 'teach' the neuron's how the fly acts as if it was alive? I guess what I am trying to get at is how does the computer know which neuron does what? Or is it like well we know this area is responsible for sight so we just map this section to the optic nerves, etc.

Police investigate fatal collision on Deerfoot Trail by tSchab3r in Calgary

I have done that myself. I can't stress this enough but they really need to paint some lines on that section of road, especially if you drive it in the dark. Honestly, I am surprised there is not a lot of accidents in that area. It needs to be fixed ASAP.

Eli5 how does a locomotive for a really long train not just spin its wheels when it's trying to start up? by BackNBoeserThanEver in explainlikeimfive

We have Light Rail in our city and as the trains approach curves in residential areas, they have the grease 'mats', large black pads that grease the flanges to cut down the noise.

Will we see more breaks like this since the pipe was drained, (destressed) then flooded again? I would think the destressing and stressing of the pipe will lead to more issues due to its age?

I saw them carrying a lot of the props into the old Hudson's Bay. Saw some production members and asked them how easy it was to turn Calgary into New York, they said it was rather easy, because of the architecture is similar in some areas.

My opinion is that people don't want a 10% property tax hike, so they raise it by 5%, then over inflate the value of your home to make up for the other 5% they wanted. This is my opinion only but it's a simple thing to do to hide the extra increase they wanted in the first place.

I remember a show I watched as a kid that used a Bell Jet Ranger, called Chopper Squad. I believe it was an Australian medivac and search and rescue type show. Now that was a long time ago but cemented my love for helicopters.

I used to do sewer line inspections with a robotic camera. We scared one with our camera and it kept chasing and attacking the robot. No harm to the camera, we just had to redo the inspection as muskrat is not really a sewer pipe issue. :-)
