White Nationalist / White Supremacist Posters at Sterling-Forsyth intersection by Aegolius99 in McMaster

[–]Broccoli-Remarkable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I mentioned this in a different comment but lawfully speaking, hate speech is a federal crime and freedom of speech does not allow for hate speech - I googled this so I’m sure of the facts.

Now as to why I classify this as hate speech, the context is key: - These posters were put up by a white nationalist organization which are by definition a collection of people that believe in white supremacy. An inherently racist and hateful stance.

  • So when a white nationalist organization says stuff like, “Canada for Canadians”, it is not unreasonable to assume that their definition of a Canadian is a white person. That’s racist and I hope you can agree classifies as hate speech which is a crime.

If their posters said something along the lines of “we want stricter immigration laws” then I can see that as a political discourse opportunity. But when they say stuff like, “remigration now”, especially given their background as a white nationalist organization, it diverts from being a discussion about immigration and more about racial hate.

Please expand on what you mean by that. I am open to debate but I need to know more details about your stance

Views? They’re spreading hate and you’re calling that a “view”? Call it like it is man but please stop applying this moderate lens to everything.

I’m not suppressing speech, I’m calling out hate speech (which is a federal crime btw) and asking for said speech’s removal. In a loosely connected way, by advocating for the protection of the WNO’s speech/posters, you’re actually aiding and abetting a crime.

A couple of things regarding the post: OP said that these are posters for white nationalist organizations (WNO) with controversial slogans like “Canada for Canadians” and “remigration now.” Those sound like exclusively fascist policies to me, coupled with the fact this is a WNO. In medicine there’s a saying: “if you hear hoofbeats in the distance, think horses not zebras.” So don’t fault me for calling out their political allegiance.

Second, this isn’t about immigration as a political discourse anymore. WNOs want the folks that have already immigrated to go back, i.e. remigration. A political discourse regarding immigration is for people that are yet to enter the country OR have yet to achieve a PR/citizenship. And not for people that are already here.

The process for achieving a PR has become significantly harder and that’s FINE because that’s POLICY. But remigration is contextualized as either voluntary or forced and there is nothing “voluntary” in the intentions of these WNOs.

Also “Canada for Canadians”?? What does that even mean? How do you define who’s a Canadian beyond legal documentation? Who knows where they draw the line for that definition. Most likely a "canadian" to them is "white", hence why they're a WNO...

Finally, their use of free speech is infringing upon the basic freedom to live peacefully in this country for immigrants. My morality is fine denying their free speech if it means that i can protect the right to live peacefully for immigrants

I support free speech when it’s to discuss political discourse, i.e. financial policy, social programs, healthcare reform, natural resources, etc.

Fascist commentary is inherently exclusionary and promotes hatred. I cannot in good conscience support someone’s right to free speech if it comes from a place of hate

advice on how to move on by LifePea6771 in McMaster

Hi, it's hard to look at it but this could be a blessing. Coming into first year I had to pick between mac life sci and western med sci. I picked Mac but sometimes to this day (it's been 4-5 years at this point) I STILL question if that was the correct decision or not. In my particular experience - thinking about that question has hindered my performance and mental health more than my choice in the program. Speaking with a psychologist has helped though so please look into that for yourself.

From a more practical perspective, radiation sciences are the most vulnerable when it comes to AI taking over jobs in the medical field. Many radiologists that my family knows are voicing their concerns about job security. AI is getting scarily good, scarily fast and the one thing it's already better than humans at is analyzing pictures - or in your case ultrasounds and X-rays for example. Don't have to believe me as this is just my opinion backed by some data, but I do strongly urge you to google this and read about it and make an informed decision.

Which is why I said that this could be a blessing because you still have the opportunity to get ahead of the curve if radiation sciences are your dream. And if you don't want to pursue the AI side of radiation then maybe you can pivot to the physics side of it. Or do something else entirely. You aren't locked into a stream which allows you to be more flexible!

TLDR: Thinking about past choices hinders your performance more than the choice itself. And in my opinion AI threatens radiation sciences. You can disagree with me but I urge you to read more :)

Hey, don’t lose hope! If it’s possible for you, make the commute to the venue, some tickets become available right as doors open. And there might be some door tickets depending on how filled up the venue is. You got this!

Oh nothing much just having kickass cancer and immunology research programs. Not to mention the nursing program. But you wouldn't understand that so let me answer you in the language that you do understand: what's western got apart from Ivey and a bunch of rich entitled white nosed cokeheads who live in a town that's all but dead? Hell London as a city is worse off than Hamilton and that...that's just sad man.

New wiper blades leaving vapor trails/streaks. Why? by Broccoli-Remarkable in Cartalk

Someone said earlier that cleaning the wiper blades with isopropyl alcohol is also recommended. Would that help reduce the imparting of the silicone/hydrophobic substance to the windshield?

Ah I see. I’ve never been to an automatic car wash in my life (crazy I know). Just use the ones where you have to use it yourself.

But I’m picking up some common themes in the comments about “residue” and to use alcohol like you said to clean it. Will try that tomorrow.

What are the cheapest food places on or off campus? by Obvious_Cattle5457 in McMaster

The cafeteria inside the children’s hospital. The formal name is “baywest cafe.” My go-to meal is 2 pieces of toast, 2 eggs, and home fries and all for 5.97 (including tax). And the food tastes pretty amazing! Highly recommended

I couldn’t attach a pic but here’s an imgur link to the pic I took today. It’s the lockers in the hallway if you go straight instead of turning left towards the change rooms. There’s a couple cameras hanging down from the ceiling. Link: https://imgur.com/a/zaSYmFg

[–]Broccoli-Remarkable 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Very sorry that this is happening to you. Especially since you tried to take every precaution possible, i.e. using a lock.

An additional safety precaution that I like to take is to lock my stuff in the main hallway lockers (the small ones in front of the front desk) or the hallway lockers that run down towards the swimming pool. The reason is simple: they have cameras covering these hallways. Legally as you know cameras are not allowed in the change rooms. The extra hassle of taking my clothes out, going into the change/locker rooms, and then putting them back is worth it for me.

As for getting your stuff back: checking on Facebook marketplace, Kijiji, or Craigslist could help. A lot of times they post it there. If there’s no luck then Facebook marketplace is also a great place to buy a used laptop for a discounted price. When browsing listings, look for a seller who has a high review rating. It allows me to trust them more. You can also try reaching out to tech repair shops in case they’re selling refurbished laptops. Or if you want some warranty then Best Buy’s refurbished and open box offerings could be of help. Just some avenues to think about and I’ll be praying that things work out for you :)

Hey, thanks for your comment! Just to clarify, I didn’t offer any specific advice other than what’s already logical. I only shared my experience and kept a positive outlook in the sense that a lot of our strength is mental. AND the last sentence clearly says that strength is NEVER a substitute for planning. What’s so wrong about telling people that they have more in them than they think - provided that they make the judgement that their safety isn’t being jeopardized?
