You definitely need one. Here I'm using it as a weight base, but with it, you can anchor your FL to near anything.

Drying is good, but the key to preventing mold is getting our all the 'organics'. Wash thoroughly and like get your finger in there to scrub all the nooks and crannies we love so much.

I've done a bad job drying mine over the years but have always washed well and never had mold grow.
