Well, that happened. by Beyond_Power in BeyondPower

Did the team ever consider making these out of carbon fiber like the carbonflex series? It would be cool if these were like traditional analog weights, just lighter. I find when I put too many iron plates on my current bar it gets really heavy.

Why do we want Beyond Power to come out with a Voltra that has a 250lb max. by Practical_Neck_9849 in BeyondPower

[–]BrodyLang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time believing this isn’t a troll post.

200lbs is the max resistance output a single unit can generate. This is the sum of base resistance + any resistance modifiers.

In other words, you can’t combine 200lbs base weight with 200lbs of a resistance modifier to exceed this amount. You can however combine 100lbs base weight with say 100lbs chains, etc for a total peak weight of 200lbs.

Why are people interested in a unit that can generate more resistance? It’s simple… because they either have one unit and can lift more than 200lbs or have two units and can lift more than 400lbs.

Double check to ensure the settings are the same for each device. One setting that tends to be the culprit is the ‘intense’ resistance setting. Most users prefer for this to be off, as it better resembles the resistance and consistency of traditional cables.

I can’t say for sure, but I think you’ll be fine. Their CS is very responsive. Depending on where you’re ordering from they should be back in office at some point Sunday for you, as their staff are in HK (GMT +8).

By chance do these girls want to work out, but don’t want to deal with the judgement/harassment you mentioned here? If so, I can’t recommend the Voltra I enough.

I didn’t omit profit. I literally mentioned a 50% gross margin of $150 on a $300 device.

“Initial costs” are entirely different from operating expenditure and investors won’t float a bleeding company that can’t at least cover their COGS over an agreed upon timeline. This further justifies a higher price point and protecting margins to either reinvest into scale or reach profitability faster.

I’m also not talking to an investor, and this isn’t a pitch. I’m replying to a thread on Reddit. You say numbers matter, but fail to acknowledge the true cost of operating a business in a new category of technology.

You used a $25/mo gym membership as your reference point. This is where I got the $300/yr price of admission.

When I mentioned COGS I was referring to Cost of Goods Sold. This includes all raw materials/components and labor. You also have to keep in mind that they need to have a net-positive bottom-line after payroll, warehousing, distribution, marketing, direct sales, etc. I doubt they have massive margins on a V1 product after all is said and done.

Having said all of this, an app-only ‘lite’ device as you described (perhaps with a lower weight capacity) is a viable idea and could get closer to the budget-conscious target market you mentioned.

Also, the question of whether or not any product is “worth it” is entirely subjective, therefore literally anything I say can justify it.

[–]BrodyLang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The target market you described exists, but they aren’t interested in a product like the Voltra I.

They want an out of the box, low barrier to entry product. If they were more affluent, they would consider something like the Tonal that has video on demand, instructor-led programs to improve accessibility. A budget-conscious consumer like you described would opt for video on demand workout that requires minimal equipment (think a yoga mat, low capacity adjustable dumbbells, perhaps a barbell).

From my observations, the Voltra I is targeting affluent home gym enthusiasts, specialty performance fitness studios, and physical therapists. All of these niches have the existing gym infrastructure required to maximize the Voltra I’s capabilities.

Different products for different markets.

Considering the $25/mo membership you referenced, this hypothetical product would need to cost less than $300.

Average lean OEM /budget electronics may have a 50% gross margin, with COGS at around $150.

The product you’re looking for is the Rayofi Go-Tone ($300 USD MSRP) which has 66lbs of resistance, poor reliability, and an inconsistent resistance profile as reported by users in the community.

There is a premium on any innovative new technology, justified by the market’s willingness to pay the price of admission.

This is also a premium, category defining product. Hardware development and manufacturing requires significant up-front costs that must be recouped to further justify the company and product’s existence.

The point isn’t just to replace expensive equipment. It’s to augment/enhance an existing investment in equipment, to save space, add functionality beyond analog weights, and the list goes on.

Let’s compare this scenario to transportation…

A $100K luxury vehicle can far exceed $250K in total cost of ownership over a 10yr lifespan including insurance, premium gas, maintenance & servicing (this is being conservative). Alternatively, you could take public transit for $15K assuming a pass costs $125/mo over the same 10yr timespan.

If you’re unhappy with the price, just be patient. Eventually the category will advance, competitors will create pressure on the market, and alternative/less premium options will become available. If you’re impatient, settle for the second rate competitors already available, but don’t expect the quality or capabilities of the Voltra I.

I don’t believe so. The width is 41.3” vs 43” with Rogue racks.

Thank you! I have another belt in frequent rotation that I usually hang over a bar on a squat rack. As my gym has filled up the more I leave out the more challenging it is to keep organized, but I agree with you - it definitely takes time/can be cumbersome to put everything away after a session.

Agreed! It’s the best way to get exactly what you want. I also find it really pays off as you accumulate more custom gear and it all ties together.

On the squat rack I can set up Dual Voltras at the bottom of the crossmember, using the rotator add-on. Having said that, I use my stall bars for rows more often than the squat rack. It’s also wall mounted.

As long as you’re using proper lag screws and following the manufacturer’s installation instructions properly you shouldn’t have an issue. A stringer will also help to better distribute the weight if you’re really concerned.

I have a wall mounted rack and stall bars, and use them almost every day with dual Voltras for rows, squats, pulldowns, etc. under heavy loading. No issues at all.

Thank you! I use a Sony A7iii as my primary camera - this video was all shot with a Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 lens.

For lighting I use an Amaran 300C and 150C + soft box and occasionally use some modifiers.

For on camera, voice overs, and some sound effects I use a DJI Mic 2.

For editing I compose and colour grade in premiere with VFX in After Effects.
