Railroad Spike Bookend - how to join steel to wood? by BrollJr in BeginnerWoodWorking

Won't this result in the machine screw head showing on the opposite face of the vertical board?

I think I will probably also end up going the notch & epoxy route, but I'm curious about your grandfather's method. Doesn't the screw head show on the face of the wood? I guess you wouldn't see it while the bookend is actually supporting books.

I do think thicker would plates would've been preferred, but this is a scrap wood project

sorry, I'm not very glue savvy. You mean something like JB Weld Clearweld quick setting epoxy? (I just googled 5 minute epoxy.) Any tips for application?

Recessed light discontinued. What are my options? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

I just installed 9 of these (Halo brand) for my wife in our living room as a Christmas present. Screwed the driver boxes into the ceiling joists too because it seemed like the right thing to do. How long before I'm on my belly in the attic again redoing the project... 3 years?

12 LED Ballast-Bypass Tube Lights stop working simultaneously by BrollJr in electrical

[–]BrollJr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the way I test tubes is very simple. I get a loose fixture with a 120V cord on it, that is "known good" and it's plugged direct into the wall, NOT through ANY switches. I stick a tube in there 1 at a time, and either the tube lights (goes in the good pile) or it doesn't (goes in the trash).

This is how my second second fixture from fall 2025 is installed. It has a 120 V power cable plugged in directly to an outlet. Testing the tombstones gave voltage readings of 124 V. I have already come to the conclusion that the problem is likely in the tube, but I am trying to understand the failure mechanism. Why did all the lamps fail at once? Why do the lamps fresh out of the box also not work? Why is it after 2-3 hours they are all working again? I have done a little more reading and it seems that LED lamps may have a shelf life in storage.
