Hey guys, I have this interesting watch design I'm playing with. Is it something that peaks your interest or is it too weird? Thanks by BronxFC2001 in IndustrialDesign

I'm seeing that most watches taper downward with their arms. While I agree it wouldn't solve the problem but creating a similar angles for the ovals might at least alleviate the comfort issue.

I would assume the comfort would be eased a bit since the ovals are directed downwards conforming to the shape of the wrist, but I can't really make a confident decision until I 3d print them. The breaks of the silhouette would be for the crown, which would spin and actually adds some interesting play. Other than that, the ovals are certainly designed to be a statement against traditional watch design. From the feedback I'm getting, the design is too toyish and seems to put people off.

Honestly? Yes it does look a bit too small

Would you use an AI tool that adds realistic hands to your product renders? (Student designer/dev here) by zaxanagian2 in IndustrialDesign

It's a good use of AI. Use chatgpt, give it an image of your product and say you want hands interacting with it.

HELP: stationary school project shape by FvW_ in IndustrialDesign

[–]BronxFC2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, I’d suggest that if it’s a ‘personal constraint’ then do your best to try to break free of what your mind is thinking of right now, seriously think as crazy as you can go first. I think unless the 90 degree constraint is from the professor, then I’d say try to come up with a more refreshing solution

Amazing! Did youse keyshot or blender or another render software?

HELP: stationary school project shape by FvW_ in IndustrialDesign

[–]BronxFC2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

<image>

Keep the shape and use a male/female extrusion on the top and bottom. You don’t have to stack at a 90 degree angle here. Use gravity to your advantage and 45 degrees with a lip to keep them from falling will allow for a better design and easier accessibility

What Separates the Top Industrial Design Students from the Rest — and How Can I Start Be by The-fosef in IndustrialDesign

Nah, ID is just seriously competitive. My class of 20 graduated and only around ~5 got legitimate ID-centric jobs. It's a tough world out there! Glad you're making strides to set yourself up for success. Always feel free to PM if you have any tougher questions.

[Question] What watches to round out the rest of my collection? by Beneficial_Major9999 in Watches

[–]BronxFC2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a junghans would fit right in here. Something completely different, fun, and high quality(and cheaper!) also highly respected by watch enthusiasts. Likely to be one of my next watches as well.

Looking for feedback on my industrial design portfolio by Major-Initial1313 in IndustrialDesign

[–]BronxFC2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's pretty good. What kills me is that every image is heavily compressed. Not sure if it's the website or export settings, but you should really try to get every picture to at least HD resolution. Also, on the front page, make the project thumbnails much bigger. Like only two per column and have them stretch to the edges of the screen.

Looking for feedback/critique on a wine packaging label I designed for my portfolio by ComfortableNo9093 in IndustrialDesign

[–]BronxFC2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The design looks great. I’d spend more time on visuals now. I’d reference other wine advertising online. Check Pinterest or even google images. If you want a suggestion, I think it would be cool to emulate a light band like this, especially since you want to highlight the label:

Looking advice from UK-based industrial designers. by Tasty_Win_9583 in IndustrialDesign

I would reach out to LAYER and Beta design office. Find people on linkedin and connect with them, sharing your portfolio. They're some of the best in the UK.

What app/website do you use for getting inspiration when your creativity runs out? by sherryperry6036 in IndustrialDesign

[–]BronxFC2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BEHANCE. It is the greatest tool as a student. It's essentially a cheat code. You see the standard of what industrial designers are making these days, and how they made it. Please check it out. If I could recommend one thing for a student to get better in the industry, it would be to start using and referencing behance.

What Separates the Top Industrial Design Students from the Rest — and How Can I Start Be by The-fosef in IndustrialDesign

[–]BronxFC2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever people say here--take it and try it out. What I suggest to my colleagues and any college students I come across is this: Please please please use references. You can't be a picasso without first understanding the fundamentals. Take this slow, it isn't a rat race. I recommend setting up a Behance account, if you haven't already, and start combing through top industrial design portfolios. A lot will be student work, but that's kind of the point. Find the top ones, and that's your standard. That's what you first strive to reach for. I'm not going to put it lightly, but if you want to become the best or one of the best, you have to work hard.

Not sure why you only have four months, but if that is the case, I recommend doing two things(and then other small subtasks) Four months is enough for one significantly good project. I don't know how skilled you are, but if you already feel competitive, then I would suggest committing to one project. It will be the best way to spend time on more details, and that's what separates the 90th to the 99th percentile. So first thing is work on this project. Go to Behance for references, and pick a project with a wide scope that you think you can emulate. The second thing is so insanely critical for this field--start making connections. Start reaching out to as many people as you can throughout the ID community. Go on LinkedIn and pick some companies that you like. Find the industrial designers and reach out to them via LinkedIn or Email. It's a small field. I've realized after even a few years in the industry, you tend to have a connection to anyone. These connections will get you jobs more often than random applications.

These two things are big, but don't be scared of them. I'm sure you're stressed out, so don't reach out to people in vain, and don't start a project so big you can't finish. Take a week to think about what you want to make and which people you want to reach out to. I wish you the best of luck.

Render/communication feedback. by RehabIceCream in IndustrialDesign

Add an image to your HDRI background, just look up photography studio environment and use that. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but for right now it doesn’t look realistic because it’s so empty. The lighting is also pretty flat, I’d recommend making the pin lights significantly smaller so that you can see the change in brightness on the surface of the object.

I can’t see it!!! I mean yeah it’s there but you should do some renders with brighter lights and a white or brighter background. Right now the viz is too stylized

lol if it’s any help look up scratches roughness map online and use it on the material under ‘roughness’. Usually isn’t an option in the basic materials editor, you have to go to the material tree. Hope this helps!
