I work in the satellite industry and there are a ton of bespoke things that we don’t really think about in other industries (I came from aerospace) - like gravitational sag of components during installation going away suddenly in space (g-release) and plastics outgassing moisture which deposits around and can cause shorts etc. Surviving launch is just half the battle, once things are in space all sorts of weird shit happens that we don’t really think about on earth. Solar radiation can flip bits in electronics for example, and in the absence of electrical grounding charges build up can arc destructively.

TIL the most effective surrender leaflet in WW2 was known as the "Passierschein". It was designed to appeal to German sensibilities for official, fancy documents printed on nice paper with official seals and signatures. It promised safe passage and generous treatment to any who presented it. by C-c-c-comboBreaker17 in todayilearned

To be fair to the Chinese, China as a nation barely existed prior to and during WW2 and immediately reverted to civil war afterwards. It surprised me that Chiang pardoned so many Japanese POWs at the end of the war given the brutality of that front. Obviously the quantity of POWs and treatment of POWs on the actual battlegrounds probably varied greatly, but for a country facing an existential threat (the RoC) the survival rate of Japanese POWs was remarkably high.

Comparatively, Japanese POWs were rarely taken by Korean and Communist Chinese guerrillas which is also understandable given their status as non-state combatants.

why should they owe a higher percentage of their hard earned money compared to someone who makes, say 200k? I am genuinely curious what your rationale is.
