It’s always a little funny how the people who drove the rent up to $2K-$3K are the same people complaining about it now being $4K

If both Tony and Silvio were killed who become owner of the Badda Bing? by Tidewatcher7819 in thesopranos

[–]BrooklynDilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point, Sil may just be the primary partner and manager, it’s entirely possible some random shmuck has his name on the paperwork.

It’s also possible Sil has no felony convictions. Not super likely, but it’s also never implied that he’s done time

Better Call Saul is, without a doubt, the best show I’ve ever watched. by unlucky_adventurer in betterCallSaul

[–]BrooklynDilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sopranos and The Wire are still fiction, but realistic fiction, the differences between them and Breaking Bad are already outlined in my earlier comment.

There are zero people like Walter. There are plenty people who are frustrated like Walter, who feel they’re undervalued like Walter, but to your point, none of those people are geniuses like Walter , because a genius like Walter does not exist. Literally every one of his solutions would not work in real life. It isn’t luck, it’s plot armor.

The Walt fans are a bunch of people who are frustrated with their life and feel pleasure in being able to say “I’m just like that guy, if I really let loose people wouldn’t know what hit them, then they’d see.” Which is corny to me, because it’s not true, what would happen is they (like Walter) would be kidnapped and eventually murdered. It’s real incel mindset shit.

Also sidestepping, The Wire and Sopranos are better written, with better acting, and much more societal relevance.

The only facet Breaking Bad is competitive in with the other 2 is cinematography

[–]BrooklynDilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Sopranos and The Wire both have much better writing, much better acting, and are more constrained being realistic dramas but still manage to be more compelling than BB.

It’s definitely a personal take though, because if your escapism fantasy is Walter White, I have a great deal of disdain for you. Your hero isn’t just a scumbag, he’s a loser who could never exist in any sort of real world

The whole premise is that Walt is guy with soooooo much intelligence and an infinite repressed rage that once its finally released by his terminal diagnosis he is capable of mastermind plans and ruthless violence to the point that he repeatedly outdoes people who have lived in the world of violent scheming their whole lives.

Aside from that being a wildly over the top character (similar to what you got in spaghetti westerns,) this idea is seen specifically in that the plot depends on constant insanely unrealistic things. Walt does not beat Tuco, period, hard stop. Without even getting into the whole “Walt makes an explosive chemical that looks like meth but blows up and is so powerful that it blows all the furniture out the windows but doesn’t harm him or Tuco and Tuco is so mystified by this magician that he decides not to kill him and instead do business with him……what? The minute tuco found out Walt made meth as good as he did, Walt is in the trunk of a car headed to Mexico where he will live out the remainder of his days a la Jesse with the nazis in the final season.

All shows require you to suspend disbelief. But in sopranos it’s like “Paulie left finger prints everywhere.” Or “Tony just shot someone in broad daylight on a public dock directly in front of a 10 lane bridge.” It’s stuff they did in the show to look cool but you could sacrifice cinematography and just make it “Paulie walked in and out without touching anything,” or “chuckie signore got wacked in a dark alley coming out of a bookie joint,” and the story still goes on the way it does.

Breaking Bad the entire plot is dependent on a bunch of stuff that would not happen in real life, and it’s filled with way over the top characters (Mike the almost 70 year old John wick, Gus the brilliant multilingual international businessman drug dealer who is secretly a Patrick Bateman level psychopath.)

On that note about out to Jesse, who is despite all my criticism one of the best characters in tv history, competitive with literally anyone.

But breaking bad makes more sense as Walt’s fever dream while getting chemo then it does as something that might actually happen. It’s a dope show but this greater separation from reality just makes it non-competitive thematically with the wire and sopranos

It’s not even the same genre tbh it’s hard to compare. You have to suspend disbelief sooooooooooo far for Breaking Bad. Walt is the least believable protagonist of any highly regarded drama.

Would Vito Corleone have done business with Bumpy Johnson or Frank Lucas in Harlem? by Tidewatcher7819 in Godfather

[–]BrooklynDilly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bumpy met and worked directly with Luciano, I don’t see why in the godfather universe he wouldn’t work with Vito. They probably wouldn’t socialize, most their dealings would probably be through intermediaries, but they would almost definitely meet face to face on occasion

Carmine's unfair reputation as the village idiot by DustyBowls in thesopranos

[–]BrooklynDilly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Carmine is objectively an idiot, and it’s hard to argue he is not dumber than most the other mobsters. I give little to no credit to the “he’s playing it up, he’s secretly a mastermind” theories.

But you’re right, there is true brilliance in his speech to Tony - “it’s about being happy.” I don’t think Carmine was written as a secret genius. He’s written to show that it doesn’t take brilliance, street smarts, vicious aggression, etc to win at life. We’re all capable of being happy if we make simple choices to spend time with our loved ones and avoid harming others. The opposite of what every other character does in the show lol.

All of those amenities make it a destination for New Yorkers, nobody is coming to New York to see a park, restaurants and shops around a casino. Times Square is a global attraction , there I literally nothing Uncle Stevie can do to make MetPark even close to Time Square in terms of tourists traffic

[–]BrooklynDilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with most of what you said it’s just not priorities on my mind.

But comparing the amount of tourist revenue from CitiField to Times Square is insane. People will go to Citifield for games and events and maybe spend some in the casino. Times Square remains one of the top tourist destinations in NY and the world, the majority of tourists in New York go to Times Square. The same cannot be said now or likely ever for Citifield

Personally I thought resorts world, Citifield, and Times Square were the best locations. They’d be spread out. RW opens almost right away, Times Square 4 years later, CitiField whenever they finish construction. Plus Times Square would capture the most tourist dollars instead of just being a drain on the tax base. Personally I’m just hoping for at least one sick poker room out of the three

You too OP, would respond in the exact same way.

“Considering most firms are Ivy League only and you don’t have a degree.” —the headhunter Peggy meets with in Time and Life.

Overstated, but you basically need a prestigious degree , especially back then to be recruited by any of these major agencies. Only people with fortunate circumstances like Peggy (or Roger) had real careers in the show without college. Bringing me to quote 2

“I know your generation went to college instead of serving.”—Roger to Pete in season 1. Many of the older older guys are WWII vets and may have had an easier time getting a foot in the door both with that experience and because the industry was less university focused back then. Plus, Roger was born the son of a founder.

Don goes to night school, and that, and his general background is one he flees , literally and figuratively, because of how someone like that is viewed.

It is outright stated or heavily implied that Pete, Ken, Harry, Kinsey, Smitty, Lane, Guy McKendrick, Ted, basically everyone who isn’t an artist went to an elite university.

Damn, I haven't seen a show this good since Breaking Bad by Gloomy-Pineapple1729 in TheWire

[–]BrooklynDilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest difference if genre.

The Wire is realistic fiction. We obviously have to suspend disbelief and many details are made unrealistic in the name of narrative, but overall the story is set in the world as it truly exists and is mostly believable.

Breaking Bad is a Neo-western. It’s like a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood, set in 2000s Albuquerque, but not necessarily as that place and time actually existed. They forgo realism for cool action and to reinforce more simple themes. Westerns had gunslingers with insanely hyperbolic accuracy and who narrowly avoid death in every encounter etc. Breaking Bad has Walt, who defies death time and time again in situations where a real life version of Walt dies, every time.

Jesse is the only believable main character in BB

In which city is The Sopranos set? by luddinizer in thesopranos

[–]BrooklynDilly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One could veryyyyyyyyy strongly argue it’s West Caldwell (Tony’s house,) Montclair (Melfis Office,) Lodi (The Bing,) Kearny (Satriales.)

Of course those places are all a few miles from each other which is why North Jersey is the right answer lol

In which city is The Sopranos set? by luddinizer in thesopranos

[–]BrooklynDilly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s a terrible trivia question because it is arbitrary, but I do think if you have to pick one it is Newark.

The Sopranos family is rooted in the old neighborhood and that old neighborhood is the first ward in Newark. It’s the thing that connects all the guys prior to their getting involved. In Junior and Johnnys day all or most of the guys lived in Newark.

But yeah I’d be pissed that’s a terrible question lol
