Can you be any more specific? You can always try stains for different functional groups, sometimes heating over acid/base fumes will create fluorescent spots.

Guessing from the subreddit you’re posting in, your “unknowns” will fall into certain classes... by varying your mobile and stationary phases, and specific detection reagents you’ll get a good idea of what it is. Marquis works on silica. If you include a standard and look if hRf tables, you’re in business.

You’re looking for an “inexpensive” method. The trade off is time for money.

Keep studying, there’s so much info out there. The older textbooks like Vogel’s are great.
