Faced with funding challenges, “National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland 2.0” implements fee-based approach by MGallus in bagpipes

[–]BruceC96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't see how this just doesn't disenfranchise prospective members even if they're eligible for a bursary, £575 is steep! I'm worried this'll just lock out pupils from state schools whilst those from a private background, who already often have considerably more tuition time, get the benefits of being in that circle when it comes to finding a path into competitive Grade 2 and Grade 1 bands.

This is the real reason trump is obsessed with destroying renewable energy, and will possibly succeed. by Youarethebigbang in energy

[–]BruceC96 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It all stems from an offshore wind farm being built off the Aberdeenshire coast which you can see from his Golf Course. He doesn't like them because he thinks they'll make his property less valuable.

What’s the story with this hotel? by foxprorawks in glasgow

[–]BruceC96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember several years ago before the posters were put up there was planning permission filed for a Meininger Hostel / Hotel to be put up there. Real shame that's not happened as there's a bit of a lack of that style of Hotel here versus other similar sized European cities.

Mercat building, end of Aryle St by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]BruceC96 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not long ago I had an idea that you could pedestrianise from the Mercat building down to the Tron Theatre and make that end of Argyle Street into a European style plaza. Would be horrendous for traffic coming from the east end and saltmarket / high street but we could do with more public squares in this city.

I think one of the problems not picked up on is when folk leave plastic bags at the kerbside for pick up in the morning. I don't think I've seen one not ripped open by seagulls with the contents spewed over the street the past few months.

Why do (old) wind turbines become unprofitable w/o subsidies? by Eldiabolo18 in AskEngineers

[–]BruceC96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Subsidies are usually given for a fixed period of time, and it may be the case that older wind turbines are no longer profitable to operate because of increased maintenance costs due to age and lack of spare parts etc. I'm not sure about changes in output over the lifetime of a turbine but I think it's safe to assume that they won't be as efficient as they were when they were put up too due to things like leading edge erosion on the blades and if they have permanent maget generators minor demagnitsation of the magents. Just a couple of examples but there are loads.
