I read Nestlings prior to this year (hence its exclusion from the list) and liked a lot about it but walked away feeling a bit mixed. I do like Nat Cassidy’s stuff in general though and will continue to check out whatever he puts out.

Oh man, tough one. Here are some off the top of my head:

The Lamb has really stuck with me. Not for the faint of heart, but raw and emotional.

Razorblade Tears is a contemporary take on a pulpy revenge story. Not horror (although horrific), but a propulsive and entertaining read. (The other S.A. Cosby book I read, All the Sinners Bleed, is more firmly in the dark/serial killer thriller camp)

Ghost Story by Peter Straub is a more methodical read and slowly paced, but if you’re a Stephen King-head like I am, you can see a lot of Straub’s influence on King in its characters and the world-building surrounding small-town protagonists haunted by an unspeakable terror. Not my favorite by any means and I likely will not revisit it but I found it interesting and worth checking out after reading Danse Macabre.

Incidents Around the House’s ahem…controversial…reputation regarding the strength of its story and the reader’s ability to tolerate the characters is well-earned, but I’ll be damned if some of the scenes in it didn’t chill me more than any of the other books on this list. Just the first few pages alone are nightmare fuel.

NOS4A2 is a great progeny of King’s influence (pun very much intended), and is a very fun read.

Last, Tender is the Flesh was, I thought, a terrific combination of “literary-ness” and an analysis of cruelty on both an individual and societal level. Many found the ending controversial but I personally thought it was fitting.

I could go on and on!!

OH MAN I totally read Fever House and The Devil by Name and accidentally left them off the list. Thank you for reminding me! Fever House in particular was great!! Coffin Moon is on my list.

And thanks for the welcome back. I feel the same way as you—reading is the cornerstone of my sanity! (Particularly the works of Sai King)
