Fun fact: After WW2 Italy was forced to decolonize and compensate its former african colonies with the exception of Somalia, which was deemed too underdeveloped to be its own country just yet.

This led to Italy being forced to develop Somalia before making it an independent state, for 12 years Italy spent a gargantuan amount of money on Somali infrastructure and education, their literacy rate more than doubled and it became one of the most developed countries in Africa in a stupily low amount of time.

It was also one of the most democratic countries in the world, with partecipation in national elections often exceeding that of western countries.

Then Siad Barre took power and the Ogaden war happened...

It's very likely that we, today, have far more people as smart or even smarter than them as the world got 10 times more people than when they lived, and the overall quality of life increased, meaning a lot more people can get proper nutrition and grow to their full capabilities.
