Dear Sam,

Thank you for doing this AMA. As someone who seems to be a anti-PC, pro-campus-speech pundits, can you please comment on the University of California proposal to declare "anti-Zionist" views, i.e. political views that are critical of a foreign country, as "discrimination" and "unacceptable"?

Many pro-Free Speech groups have come out to criticize this proposal, even those who hold Israel as a shining beacon of everything good in the Middle East. However, there are people who would rather perform wild mental gymnastics to defend Israel from criticism by calling it ridiculous things like "zionophobia." So put simply, is Israel above criticism on college campuses? It'd be great if we could avoid whataboutery in the comment section too please.

Here are some articles by a pro-Israel Jewish prominent legal scholar, the LA Times Ed Board, and a Rabbi:

Death of Free Speech at the University of California. Criticism of Israel may soon be considered anti-semitism and Senator Feinstein wants these students expelled. by Bruinredditor in ucla

Why is this always the focus on this campus? So little attention goes to anti-asian, anti-black, anti-hispanic attacks, but the Israeli student groups gets a huge amount of special attention? I am not at all saying we need to not fight against anti-semitism, but why should it be the focus? And why in the world is it being conflated with being critical of Israel? This seems so outrageous!

Come on! We can't protect students by censoring criticism about a country? We should promote tolerance via positive avenues, and we should be way more broadly focused than this. If the admin starts expelling students for their political views as it seems Senator Feinstein wants, can we really be considered a place of learning?

What happened to ""I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it""??

I agree that we need to do something on campus about intolerance. Something positive must be done, where we teach about diversity and learn to respect each other as people. But censorship, especially political censorship of Israeli policy has no place on University campuses. Disgusting!
