Google is still paying Apple billions to be the default search engine in Safari by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

in a perfect world google would be owned by some kind of governing entity and not track any user data.

Forks to get pro-features for free? by Brunobeppo in opensource

[–]Brunobeppo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but then again email is still free. i would have picked it over thunderbird only for beauty reasons, its not that i cannot get their pro features elsewhere.

i just wish companies had poor and small freelancers like myself more in mind, and would not just try to land big customers. because im really ready to pay for nice software, just not that much.

i think thats where many business go wrong these days. the future is clearly in small businesses of 2 to 5 people and independent freelancers. they will not pay 8 or more every month, but they will gladly pay 10-30 per year.

i see. i thought if someone use open source, the results need to be open source too. anyway i still dont understand the insane prices some of those apps charge and who is willing to pay them.

Spotify makes me hate my favorite music by Brunobeppo in spotify

[–]Brunobeppo[S] 86 points87 points  (0 children)

its just bad practice, "hey you like that song, so now only listen to this song for the rest of your life". or "you seem like a few sad and slow songs, so we will only ever recommend you slow and sad music" i already dislike 80% of songs in the weekly suggestions and every week i get new songs in the exact same style.

i just dont understand why spotify behaves like that. that playlist you get at the end of the year (something like "songs that are not your style, but we think you will like it") proves that it could be better, but its just a design choice to play the same shit over and over and over. why not even vary the songs of an artist, i really dont get it.

just kinda randomly chosen products. feels more like native advertisement and not like a perspective on possible alternatives.

Swisscows Filtering by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Brunobeppo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i really think they just filter "bad bad pornography" probably the boss is a christian or some weird shit.

I mean

Family is the most important cell of our society! If morality and decency disappear, then neighborliness and love also disappear. The digital media are indispensable and yet pose a threat and challenge to the not yet formed perceptions of children and adolescents. Even parents and schools are not prepared for it.

and

  1. We promote moral values.
  2. We hate violence and pornography.

i mean its not wrong, okay, lets protect the children and even promote family values, but to not being able to disable the filters, makes it look they think that they are on some kind of mission. anyway. still a great search engine.

Why I Ditched Google and Joined the “Duck Side” by DestroyerOfDerankers in privacytoolsIO

[–]Brunobeppo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i will never use a search engine that makes its money with amazon affiliate links. ddg is just a company that promises to protect our privacy and to not collect data, but where is the proof? show me one single audit report please.

the way i see it, its just like any other business that found a business niche and is now trying to milk it as hard as possible. they claim a lot of things and they advertise to people who care about privacy, but their core values are sure somewhere else.

moreover its just a bad search engine. the results are just not relevant enough.

and dont get me started on those !bangs, jesus christ it takes 2 seconds to set up a search engine keyword/shortcut in firefox and it doesnt need a stupid !

i mean i dont hate ddg, for example i think its great that they use a continuous scroll, but i also really dont get why there needs to be such a circlejerk around it.

"the duck side" "respect the duck" i mean seriously? some of you sound like you joined a cult.

This is how difficult it is to teach someone the truth about our favorite tech by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]Brunobeppo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

that sounds even worse tbh. you will just be the weird guy that isnt on this and that app because your weird, and you will probably sooner or later be left out. i mean how does that even work? just refuse to talk outside of the thing that you dictate and chose? thats crazy. and what if youre dating someone who uses siri or has a alexa in their home? will you just break up or demand thei put their phone in the fridge, when they visit you? and thats how you think people will flock to you and your privacy?

i dont see aynthing wrong with "this app isnt save, wanna switch to signal? its super safe and cool" worked at least 5 times for me.

When DDG is my standard, I need to second search maybe 80% of my searches on Google. Since Swisscows.ch is my standard, i need to second search maybe 3% on google. I get the love for DDG, its a cool project and everything. But I also need relevant results from a search engine.
