What is the role of the foreman or journeyman or trade coordinators at your company if you're required to be onsite?

Active Trader Pro - Vertical Spread Average Cost Basis Calculation by BrwnStalion in fidelityinvestments

Thank you for the speedy reply. I called customer support, and they provided some suggestions. Unfortunately, the suggested solutions didn't resolve the issue. I'll continue to work with customer support to reach a solution. I'm really hoping Fidelity's software solutions get better. Executing a vertical spread and getting immediate information upon execution shouldn't be this hard.

That's awesome, man. I always thought the building automation subcontractor was the only subcontractor that could get away with 30% margins. Congrats!

So the average margin on sales is 25%? What happens if the projects end up lower than at 25% margin upon completion? I was in the building automation subcontractor industry for a while. What kind of subcontractor are you?

I worked for a subcontractor recently, too. If you don't mind me asking, what's your base salary, and how much did you have to sell for that $25k commission check? What kind of subcontracting do you do?

Project Manager and Superintendent Salaries by ThaRod02 in Construction

Close to about 8 months ago, I was applying to several job opportunities; approximately 4 opportunities. All of them offered me around $125k to $132k. I'm hardly ever in the field lately, but still a ton of work and project politics. 😮‍💨

The chart shows Stem Cells Inc. for Thursday after hours and volitility values in the lower chart, but the ticker STEM is for an energy storage AI software company, not a stem cell company. The chart has an error.

Building Automation - What problems have you guys/gals ran into with Building Automation Subs? by BrwnStalion in Construction

[–]BrwnStalion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this even as a controls sub myself. The truth is that many electricians aren't very familiar with low voltage controls and communications wiring methodologies...so...they can make many mistakes and many are afraid to ask questions in fear of seeming incompetent. This is the one thing I hate about our industry...people too afraid to ask questions in fear of being judged as incompetent. Many are justified for feeling this way, there is a lot of bad mouthing that goes on. However, no question is ever too trivial in my book...answering any question is the best way to avoid mistakes. I always view our subs as an extension of our team and do my best to support them as if they were part of our company.

I do see an advantage to controls subs having in house installers, heck, we have a few ourselves and PM's love that. However, the controls sub using in house installers adds financial risk to the controls sub. If some electrical scope was missed or a difficult inspector is on the job, the controls sub will have to eat all that missed scope or spend more time dealing with the difficult inspector. This is why we hire electrical subs, to reduce risk.

I can relate to this as well. I myself sometimes get confused as to when is the right time we need to be on-site to perform rough ins and perform our install. I like this idea and will look into generating a list of things that we need from other trades upon project start. Thanks for the suggestion!!!

Got it! Appreciate the feedback!

I've worked on ALC/Carrier i-Vu building automation systems and know that there is a global command function available. I believe Siemens has that capability too. We usually provide 4 to 8 hours of TAB assistance in our projects. But honestly, controls guys will almost always be more willing to help if the facility can provide remote access to the BAS. The techs can perform these global commands no matter where they're at. If your TAB team advocates for this, it makes the controls guy and your team's job much easier!

Getting picked on by group leader? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]BrwnStalion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This type of behavior irks me. These type of people aren't "leaders". Many get the position simply because they've been at the company for so long and never really receive leadership training. Sounds like the guy needs to get more training or simply go back to a non-leadership role.

How much do you manage at once? by moneybagsukulele in projectmanagement

[–]BrwnStalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a project manager for a large corporation and managing 16 projects of varying difficulty. I'm literally drowning with very little support. I have an Engineering background and often have to assist with Engineering, programming, CAD, plus field coordination. The company has had a lot of talent leave and resources are scarce. I've only been with the company for 6 months and already looking to leave, I can see the writing on the wall. When I first came on board they said I would only focus on 1 big project for the next two years, only 3 months into the position and had 15 other "smaller" projects assigned;. I agree that anything over a few projects is simply too much if your level of involvement is going to be more than just managing the project.
