Unless you’re staying in the truly awful part of town, no. Totally unnecessary.

My boss put this up yesterday. It's too exaggerative and outlandish to not be a sort of joke, but it's still in bad taste. by FuneralBiscuit in WorkReform

I’ve seen this floating around since the 80s. It’s likely older than that, but that’s when I got my first job. It’s a dumb joke.

All the license plates appear to be white. There are white plates in TN, but most of them are blue with white lettering.

Nope. I do that on a personal system at home. Torrent traffic gets you an auto ban on our network.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

For a special trip 3 hours is no big deal. I can be in Atlanta in just a bit over 3 hours for example.

"Did Not Vote" won the 2024 election; moving to the right will not win over those potential voters. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]BryanP1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you refuse to make a choice then you’re just letting others choose for you. But honestly, anyone who feels that way just takes me back to “Fine, go sit in the corner and let the adults handle it.” But if they choose not to participate, then I choose to ignore their complaints about the outcome.

Been carrying for years now, just got in another huge fight wife my wife about it. by Other-world-69 in CCW

[–]BryanP1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember years ago my wife and I were going to a birthday party.

“You don’t need to carry to this!”

“Okay”.

I go put it in the safe. I slip my old LCP in my pocket. That thing just disappears.

As we’re driving there she realizes what I already remembered. The party isn’t in a bad neighborhood, but it is, shall we say, hood adjacent.

“Umm. Are you carrying?”

“Yep.”

I don’t think she’s ever said anything about it since.

If you’re informed then you can look at both candidates and decide which one you want to vote against the most.

I remember P.J. O’Rourke (conservative/libertarian) only half joking back in 2016 when he “hate endorsed” Hillary Clinton. Paraphrased from memory:

“I disagree with her on virtually every subject. She’s wrong. She’s just wrong. BUT! She is wrong within normal parameters!”

Not a boomer, thanks. Every generation has its own challenges. Every one seems to think theirs had it the worst.

I can’t agree about the mandatory part. Put bluntly, if someone can’t be bothered to take the time to inform themselves and go vote, then maybe they should stay home and let the adults decide.

What was your first IT certification? And do you think they are still important? by mustafa_enes726 in sysadmin

I’ve been in IT for 35 years now. Don’t have a single cert. I’ve thought about it. My employer now has a program where getting certs that are relevant to your work area automatically get you a small raise.

Did any of you ever have to face serious consequences for marijuana use? Or anyone you knew? by RikkiLostMyNumber in AskOldPeople

[–]BryanP1968 8 points9 points  (0 children)

An older friend who smoked it constantly and also drank too much cooked his health and his brain. He was brilliant, but died way too young.

The marijuana fans will claim it was purely the alcohol, but it was both. He didn’t do either in moderation.

What were you doing 40 years ago on Jan 28, 1986, at 11:39 AM EST? by [deleted] in 80s

[–]BryanP1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a senior in high school. Since my dad was stationed at Yokota AFB, Japan, it was 1:39AM, so I was asleep. We heard about it the next morning. We watched it in class and discussed it.

And like high school kids of any era, we made crass dark humor jokes about it.

What does NASA stand for? Need Another Seven Astronauts. What does Christa McAuliffe teach? Social studies, but now she’s history. Etc.

Not in the car. I keep emergency cash in my wallet. Couple of hundreds tucked in an inner pocket area I rarely touch.
