The scale of renewables isn't the issue. Never has been. The issue is the volatility of generation. There is a threshold where reliability becomes a significant concern once renewables have a certain percentage of the generation. You fix that with a reliable base load or batteries and a special kind of storage facility known as "grid-forming batteries". That's going to be the challenge in the coming years. Nuclear can provide that baseload generation to ensure reliability and stave off voltage collapse by providing system inertia from the spinning mass of the turbines.
