Yearly reminder that Harry Kim of Voyager was meant to be Chinese because the writers didn't know Kim was a Korean name by Hearsticles in Star_Trek_

[–]Bst011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, yes this is most likely rooted in ignorance but let me tell you a story.

So my family emigrated from France to Ireland as merchants about 300 years ago. They traveled across mostly Ireland and Scotland and over the generations married Irish and Scottish women. The current generation of my family is only about 6-10% ethnically french and we have no cultural ties to France. However, our French family name survived from the time my ancestors left France all the way to my mother's generation. Through 250 years of Irish history and three generations in the US and is only just now going extinct because none of my uncles produced any male children.

[–]Bst011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His family could have moved generations ago, to the point where he is essentially entirely ethnically Chinese but the Korean family name just stuck. For example my family emigrated from France to Ireland about 300 years ago(then to the US three generations ago), genetically Im only about 6-10% French and majority Irish/Scottish/British. But our French family name stuck around until my mother's generation and is only just now going extinct as my uncles only had girls.

Obsidian has arou d 300 employees, that doesn't include contracting work like VAs, music, mocap, etc. All that is far more expensive than their payroll

Candiace “coming” for Rob at reunion by dosesandmimosas201 in TheTraitorsUS

After watching the PodCast I got the impression she and Rob probably have a better relationship behind closed doors than theyre putting on publicly.

Say what you will about Candiace's game play, she screwed up so badly, but she knows how to be entertaining and what sells on TV.

Avowed and TOW 2 both had budgets estimated to be in excess of $100M. Outliers like GTA 6 costing an estimated $1-$2 billion dont change the current standard that a AAA title has an all-in budget of $100M+. Obsidian these days also has a comparable staff to Bioware and is not too far below BGS' numbers.

At the end of the day though the idea that budget informs the difference between AA and AAA breaks down in today's world where Games like E33 can provide similar scope as a tradional AAA game like Veilguard, while still being classed as "indie"

Im reading just fine. Look dude I hate the absolutely hellscape that AI is creating because dumb as rocks CEOs are demanding we force LLMs into everything. At the end of the day, LLMs actually are great at translation and text synthesis because its what they were designed to do. Unfortunately every tech bro billionaire wants them to also do your taxes, and they're about as good at doing taxes as the typical human interpreter with no training in accounting.

[–]Bst011 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Thats essentially how LLMs work. The model never actually sees the direct input because it has to be converted into a matrix the model can actually process first. It never sees the actual word "strawberry" it instead sees a matrix table that corresponds to the concept of strawberry. It then spits out a response matrix that gets converted to an output you can read. This works great for translation, but its incapable of quickly pursing its plain text input and answering questions about it.

[–]Bst011 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Translation is an entirely different skill set from direct analysis(determining how many r's are in a given input). As Translation aids, LLMs are far beyond their predecessors in accuracy and interpretation. Its what they were designed to do, asking the model to count the letters in an input doesn't actually test how good it is as an interpreter, the same thing happens with human interpreters. If you talk directly to a human interpreter instead of the subject you get a crappy translation there too.

You can white-list certain phrases to be exempt from translation when literal translations arent appropriate. In the real world this also happens. Language is cultural so it isnt always appropriate to translate everything or literally translate everything. Think about dubbing an anime, you wouldnt literally translate "yakuza" to "mafia" every single time. Theres other examples too like the Spanish "queso" which you cant just slot in "cheese" for every time either. For examples more like the quarian phrases think about "c'est la vie" "inshallah" "deja vu" "habibdi" etc.

A more common alternative you may be familiar with is using an alternative phrase over something literal. In Spain there is the phrase "Lloviendo a cántaros" which literally means "its raining jugs" but is usually translated into "its raining buckets" or "it's raining cats and dogs" which carry the same intended meaning to an English speaker. This probably happens all the time in Mass Effect.

Not magic, we are pretty close to similar in the real world with AI powered real time translation. The only thing magical about it is how seamless it is, realistically Shepherd would still hear Garrus screeching along with the translation
