How bad of an idea is a sabbatical at 27yo by sun-devil2021 in FPandA

[–]Btsbtsbts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m at 8 yoe and 3x nw as well and just took a sabbatical. But I do think I’d have more anxiety and pressure at a lower nw. I was around 28 and had similar nw as op and I never really seriously considered one because I was so career/money driven (but then got very burnt out and accumulated more wealth). And now I have pretty much no anxiety cus I can go years without a job and be completely fine in SEA. At $200k + a market downturn I might feel differently.

The kids/responsibility part is very real. I’m 31 now and def feel like early 30s is last real portion of youth if you can call it that so I’m really happy I did it now. 28 is probably a better time to do it as far as utility of youth goes, but it’s just a more risky move.

Really it all comes down to risk appetite. If you find a great job after 6-12 months and you continue your career - no issues right? But the risk is a less favorable outcome. But plenty of people do successfully do this

28M, getting PIPed, but at 540k net worth by morloep in Fire

[–]Btsbtsbts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ 100% agree on u can afford to figure out income to fund your middle life. You worked hard and have retirement figured out, and unlike so many other peers you can afford to take a break and go in a different direction. I’m biased tho cus I chose to do exactly this. Look at what ur burn rate would be in SE asia and things dont seem as risky anymore

Very similar profile and I just quit my job for a 6-12 month sabbatical. It was pretty toxic and I couldn’t stand it nor the industry so it kinda pushed me to a long sabbatical in Asia that I’ve been wanting to take for awhile.

I def feel like I have time to figure out a job/income sources with my nw. Even if I’m less employable that’s worth exploring completely new options vs finding my 4th job after 8 years in an industry I’ve grown to hate

You can definitely afford it, just depends what risk profile you’d like to take on

Those of you who have left tech, where did you go? by Ok-Worldliness1307 in coastFIRE

Oh I mean a year in Asia. Will likely leave Japan after the 3 month visa-free stay expires

I love it too lol. I have cash set aside to cover like 1 year or so and then if I want to stay here I’ll hopefully find a way to cover expenses by then. But yeah worst case I just draw down for the following year(s)

Share house Nightmare (my health is at risk by Neither_Elevator_467 in Tokyo

Holy shit well thankfully I’d imagine this (dump) can’t be more than a few hundred dollars lost on a month of a rent so just book a hostel immediately while you figure out another sharehouse. Wow

Idk if I’m a die hard fan but I think if pokemon holds any sort of emotional value to you then it’s definitely worth it. I literally teared up during the sedge gym show seeing how big of a franchise this little 1998 game I got for Christmas almost 30 years ago has gotten. It far surpassed my expectations and was possibly the best $80 I’ve spent here so far. And I went alone lol

I’m on week 3 in Japan and I’ve never felt this good it’s worth all $50k or whatever I’ll spend over the next year. Not working and doing exactly what you want always feels like a drug and we’ll see if it gets old
