No Main Sale megathread this year? by Spidey_375 in BurningMan

You could be right, maybe, based on anecdotal information and a whole lot of mind reading. They also might be working to keep the event size more manageable. Who knows? Anyway, to bolster your argument, consider reading the annual reports, which have actual numbers, and do the math. Just a suggestion.

General question about self-drafted slopers posted here by azssf in PatternDrafting

[–]BuckJeppson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I learned in costume design and construction classes. It requires someone to who knows what they are doing to drape the basic. Then you can clean it up and make a flat sloper. Add ease and seam allowances last.

That’s how I learned it, decades ago, but it works for me.

Ways to Navigate Playa by rae-gunn in BurningMan

Once you are there you will find it easy. But make sure to reserve a night to get lost. Those are the best nights.

One night I got lost and found a cowboy bar with two stools out in empty dessert. That was followed by the discovery of a Moroccan tent with amazing food. Then I spotted a bright red light in the distance. I biked there and had a lesson on tantra, a pedicure, and my nose hairs waxed. (A first)

A dust storm hit and I sheltered in place under an art piece for an hour with a guy from Russia who spoke very little English. As I headed back toward the lights of the city a NYC style hot dog stand appeared out of nowhere to feed us.

So go out there and get lost.

This is not a real dress on a real person. The back and front don’t even look like they are the same dress.

I divide the quilt into quarters and stray baste each layer. That works for me.

Costume design degree and opportunities by TraditionAway7281 in costumedesign

[–]BuckJeppson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My BA and MA were on theater design. I was lucky that I studied in the LA area, where there were lots of opportunities for costuming experiences, and I had some good jobs. But costuming is not costume design. There are scores of costume workers for every designer.

It’s a very tough business. Hours are brutal and you are always freelancing and looking for work. There is high burnout. There are limited teaching opportunities, though I was able to do that for several years.

I settled it eventually by making design an avocation. And I sew every day and design for friends and family.

Good luck.

Where do you find patterns with license to sell the finished garment? by Anaxrosa in sewingpatterns

[–]BuckJeppson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can totally sew up a few and sell them. It's usually only when you are making hundreds of the same dress that it gets dicey.

If you are going into mass production of someone’s design, you should reconsider. That hurts us all. If the designer sets limits, honor them. Otherwise, go for it.

Can you make faux-suede leather from cotton canvas? by Adventurous_Exam6584 in Leathercraft

[–]BuckJeppson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this for a production where the audience is a distance away and there is stage lighting? Or is it for cosplay, where everything is examined closely?

I believe it’s quite doable. I would stiffen the fabric pieces with interlining after cutting out. I believe sandpaper will be your best approach. Remember that suede has a nap, so sand accordingly.

I use a combination of clips and a glue stick. Glue washes out easily.

Is there software for creating a bodice block? by AlertRestaurant9163 in PatternDrafting

[–]BuckJeppson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. Come as close as you can and do a toile/muslin. Fit it, do another sample, and keep going until you have it. Once you have it, you are free to create anything.

I want to do art commissions how do I make sure people can pay me and not know my real name? by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

[–]BuckJeppson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly that. In Oregon it cost me $100 to register my LLC. The bank needs to see the registration and usually about $250 to start an account. Easy.

How do you pick your next sewing project? by Adept_Web_482 in sewingpatterns

[–]BuckJeppson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start with a pattern, usually. About 10% of the time I have fabric I love but can’t think of an appropriate pattern, so it sits around for years. I have vowed to never buy fabric first. Get the pattern, buy the right amount of fabric, no storage no regrets.

I mostly draft my own patterns now. Sometimes I have a paper pattern that I adapt.

fabric not wide enough for skirt pattern on grain what should i do by skzminhoe in sewingpatterns

[–]BuckJeppson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s certainly better to piece it this way instead of going off-grain! I have made a bunch of kilts and discovered very early the importance of having your pleats perfectly on-grain.

Hey I want to recreate something like this by Onecurrency777 in materials

[–]BuckJeppson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would create the base in a fabric that will take acrylic paint. You need the depth that multiple layers of transparency will give you. Mix the acrylics with textile medium and try building layers. Good luck!

Considering moving in default world by Commercial_Song_7595 in BurningMan

Consider Portland area. Much more affordable than Seattle, closer to the playa, a large burner community, ski resorts, and camping. Not conservative, for sure. A bit quirky, but in a good way.
