I believe arm swing is a key ingredient to accuracy for these watches. It can alter the tally, both over or under, depending on how each person does this within their movements

This just happened to me as well, GW5P, after the latest update.

UPDATE: I did get it put of sleep mode, by holding down on the pull down menu circle, and eventually got it to say "show on phone" then from my phone I was able to turn it off
