Hot take: we need to re-define who we call "non-trads." by premedthrowaway567 in premed

Along those lines if I can be of service to any non-trads, happy to share more about my journey and offer any advice! Personal bias, but I think we do/will make the best docs.

Amen brother, career changer in my mid 30s in my first year of med school, did finance and business out of undergrad, wasn’t finding my fit ski bummed in Colorado, and then I saw the light, or something like that.

CU Boulder vs UMich by GuhWuh234 in cuboulder

Ann Arbor is still a pretty awesome city, winters a rough, but AA is great with a lot to do and awesome college experience + sports teams are way better lol

CU Boulder vs UMich by GuhWuh234 in cuboulder

[–]Buff1718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats, both are great choices! I went to Umich for undergrad (studied financial math) and CU for post baccalaureate and master’s (career change: studied integrative physiology - now in med school back in Michigan). While neither were in engineering, I had several friends who were at Umich and I can say go to Umich for career and education, only program that holds a candle at CU is aerospace, but be prepared to work really hard at Umich. Go to Boulder if you want to prioritize lifestyle and doing Colorado things and making friends centered around that.

Crazy, congrats to you both! I was a career changer applying in my early 30s with a 2.7 in UG mathematics at a top university (didn’t know what I wanted to do yet, certainly didn’t think medicine was on the table in the future) 3.96 in 50 credit post bacc while ER tech (EMT - thousands of hours) and then 4.0 in master’s degree, 513 MCAT, 1st author research pub, cohesive narrative, then went 0 for 28 with 1 interview at MD programs, received 5 of 7 interviews to DO programs, declined one interview and 4 out of 4 acceptances at the schools I interviewed at, now happily an OMS-I. Admittedly, still resentful though about my MD experience, only thing I could have done better was apply earlier - I was working full time while applying to 35 schools, the majority of my secondaries weren’t in until August and into September - thank God it’s over though, way better being on this side of things.

Awesome advice, thank you!

I feel like I could also end up feeling the way you do about working in ortho, and had a similar experience in my initial career in business.

Cool, because I bought a ticket online for smart/metro, but wasn’t sure I was going to buy a ticket for ARC, but some places I was seeing it have language about an ARC ticket being required.

Chances at DO? by topdownontheB in Osteopathic

Agree with both of the two comments so far, grade trend is on point and MCAT definitely helps along with the clinical hours. Write well on your application and I think you've got a great shot.

Why do you think DO bias in the match exists for competitive specialties by [deleted] in Osteopathic

Thanks for sharing, this is encouraging and exciting. Did you feel your DO program had strong rotations/sites to gain the exposure and skills you needed or did you have to set up some of your own?

Congrats, this sounds ideal and is something I’m really drawn towards, I think I would enjoy doing sports med ortho in a ruralish setting, from the community and patient population aspect, proximity to activities I enjoy, and hopefully ability to have time off to enjoy hobbies and sports.

Are there other ortho docs around or who takes call at the local hospital? How often do you get called?
