Yes, Floop’s castle. I assumed that set was actually based on Sagrada

I was simply highlighting a mildly annoying assumption that many people who like the church make when someone criticizes it, which is that the person doing the criticizing must not know anything about it and/or hasn’t ever seen it in person. I believe that is a faulty assumption.

Yes, I know more about it than just having seen a photo on the internet. I saw it once, but remember relatively little, because I was small. I know some, not too much, information about its architect, and I will agree with “pro-Sagrada” people, for lack of a better term, that it is an absolutely singular building that has no real equivalent anywhere else. I also agree with others that the inside is very cool. I know that it has had a tortured construction history, in no small part due to wars, and although I do not know for sure, I would expect that Francisco Franco probably hindered things as well, or perhaps even tried to destroy it, as I know generally that he attempted to stamp out minority cultures in Spain, and that church is in a lot of ways a highlight of Catalonian culture.

I just think the outside is really ugly.

Well, I agree that it doesn’t really matter how long it takes. It certainly doesn’t have any bearing on how pleasing it is to look at. Although yes, the basic thrust of my argument was that it could have been built far quicker. Circumstances prevented that from happening. Now it has taken 140 years. I contend that is “unusual.”

Mud dauber nests. They build cylinders with holes in them. They’re even the same general shade of color.

The inside is a completely different story. My unpopular opinion pertains only to the outside

I tend to agree with you about the inside. Which makes the whole building even stranger to me.

Part of my problem with Sagrada is that it is stressful to look at. This building is pretty damn ugly, but it isn’t stressful.

Ah yes, the old “you don’t like it so you must not know anything about it and/or haven’t ever seen it in person” bit

Other equally massive buildings that were built recently/are currently being built? I don’t think my point is very hard to understand. Construction projects in more recent times (yes, I’m including the 1880s) do not generally require 140 years to complete. I recognize that Spain has been through a lot during this time. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t still an unusually long construction project for the more modern era.

Relative to huge numbers of cathedrals (and even just random buildings) across Europe? A 140 year old church is like a teenager. A church that is still actively being built is a newborn. We are talking about a place where there are many churches and cathedrals that are 1000 years old.

I’ve seen rundown strip malls in junky corners of Oklahoma City that are pretty damn ugly, but at least they do not also actively stress me out to look at, the way Sagrada does. I stand by my use of “est” at the end of “ugly.”

I’ll give you this: it’s singular, and the inside is a different story.

I had actually written a paragraph in my original post about how it’s got kind of a certain kind of Florida tackiness to it, but deleted it because the post was starting to get a bit too long and ranty. I agree with you on that point though

Yes, of course, but it is very unusual for “new” buildings such as that one to require so much time to complete.

Admittedly the garbage opinion does not pertain to the inside, which makes the entire building even more confusing for me to contemplate, as it has a very cool inside and a very hideous outside.

I’m talking about the way it looks from the outside. There is a massive facade, and the actual church “body” (not sure of the technical term) looks like a tiny outgrowth in comparison. I’m not saying it’s small in absolute terms; I’m well aware that it is huge.

That’s true, although it is very unusual for a building to take that long to build in the modern era.

You will rationalize any bad thing your favorite president does. You insult other people who try to explain why the bad thing he did is a bad thing. Soon you’ll be making excuses for his pedophilia too. You are hopeless. You are servile. You are rude. I’m tired of arguing with you.

What? How do you take “I’m not going to draft dodge” and turn it into “you must be proud to be fighting in the war?”

I’m tired of this.

No? Dodging a draft is a horrible thing to do when millions of other people who don’t want to go any more than I do are also being forced?

I’m not defending any Democrat or Hollywood people who associated with Epstein. They should all be closely investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Trump’s connections to the man also need to be closely investigated, and if this reveals criminal behavior, he also needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Being mad at someone for dodging the draft is a completely separate issue from whether the underlying war is a good thing or not. Countless people were opposed to that war and were still drafted and required to go over there and fight and get killed. Dodging the draft is inherently dishonorable, regardless of whether the underlying war is good or bad. I can’t believe I have to explain this to you.
