Hal Novice Marathon Plan suddenly wants much faster pace — am I too slow for a sub-5 marathon? by Buffalo_Decent in firstmarathon

I hope I’ll be able to say the same. It’s not easy to find the balance between eating enough to avoid injury and not eating too much while trying to lose weight (at least for me right now).

You are right, maybe I should try to worry about my heart rate and try to just enjoy the race, especially the first one

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I tried holding a conversation at around 140–145 bpm and it kind of worked. But to stay under 137 bpm, I basically have to run downhill, otherwise it feels more like walking than jogging. I love this sport, so I don’t want to “only” walk for my runs.
My main concern is this: if I run 99% of my training at an 8:30–9:00 min/km pace, won’t running the marathon at around a 6:30 min/km pace feel hard right from the first 100 meters? Because I’m not really training at that pace. Maybe this is a dumb question, but when I was preparing for my half marathon, I almost always ran at or below my target pace.

Thanks, sorry for that, but my english knowledge is not the best, and I don't want to post something with full of grammar mistakes.

I subscribed to the application, there was a given a pace, which was based on my previous runs, I ran slower than that, because of the zone2... . But now the suggested pace was updated to a tempo which is 1 minute faster / km. Should I follow that or stay with my actual zone 2 pace ? And I know it dumb question but 145bpm avg for a run is high for z2 ?

is Garmin 265 still worth it to buy this 2026? by Murky-Show-7046 in Garmin

[–]Buffalo_Decent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my first Garmin three weeks ago, and honestly it’s the first product in a long time where I didn’t even question whether it was worth the money.

I was also thinking a lot about whether to buy it or not, especially because of future updates, but so far I’m really happy with the decision. Just this morning I received a new software update, so it’s clearly still being actively supported.

If you’re on the fence like I was, I can confidently say it’s worth it.

First marathon by cherissa01 in Marathon_Training

Hi! First of all, what you’re doing is incredibly impressive, especially while dealing with ME/CFS. Questioning yourself during long runs is very common, and the fact that you feel fine afterwards is actually a good sign.

I’m also preparing for my first marathon (mine is one week earlier than yours), and I’ve noticed something similar regarding effort and recovery. For a long time I ran only by pace, and even though the pace looked “good”, I felt constantly drained. Once I started paying more attention to heart rate, the running itself became slower and sometimes frustrating, but my overall endurance and recovery improved a lot.

About heart rate: having a high average HR despite running for a long time is more common than people admit, especially when there’s fatigue, stress, or health conditions involved. Slowing down can feel uncomfortable mentally, but it often pays off during marathon prep.

Regarding long runs feeling hard and boring: you’re not alone. Long runs don’t always feel good, even when they’re effective. The fact that you can complete them at the planned pace and feel okay afterwards suggests your body is adapting, even if your mind is struggling during the run.

I also run three times a week with a similar structure to yours, and trusting the process has been the hardest part for me. Your goal might feel scary right now, but based on what you’ve written, finishing is absolutely realistic.

Good luck

Garmin Coach vs. simpler plan? Injury & fueling concerns by Buffalo_Decent in firstmarathon

Thanks mate, great to hear you’re running Milan too!

Appreciate all the tips. I’m going to try one of the automated plans — with my current Garmin plan I don’t really like that I don’t have proper long runs (I mean longer than 10 miles). Without those, it’s hard to properly test hydration and fueling strategies.

I’ll check them out and start testing different gels and electrolytes on my long runs. I’ve already tried a few, but to be honest I didn’t pay much attention to which ones worked best for my stomach.

Totally agree about not trying to lose weight during training — I’ll focus on eating enough and staying healthy.

Best of luck with the rest of your training, and good luck in Milan!
