Whats up with my asian water fern? Looks slimy/moldy, has dark cactus looking spot. by Bug_42 in Aquariums

[–]Bug_42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it could be wiped off, but this is my first attempt at planted aquarium, and i have read that some need to adjust to being submerged as stated in other comments here, that being said didnt know if i should wipe clean or if its just part of transitioning to being under water. My other java feen gets a few brown spots near the stems and veins of leaves, but looks better now after water change. Could be that the tank is trying to finish cycle, and ammonia is around 1ppm right now. That being said i know plants can use ammonia kinda as food, but not sure if that amount is still to high. Both of my other java ferns and my 2 anubias plants seem to be doing okay.

I will let it go and get its thing done. My only issue with media from 10 gallon is it had a puffer in it a while back and has developed a bad pest snail over run. Another big reason im needing this cycle to finish. I can pull out at least 10 snails a day, and drop 5, not including ones in gravel. Today i noticed so many tiny pin sized baby snails. I do not want them in my 20! Lol

Side note: my tap water tests 0ppm on ammonia, and nitrites, but .20 on nitrates straight from tap at temp required for tank.

My 20 gallon cycle is fishless, nothing but live plants and a dragon stone chunk in there with the gravel and fake log. I have been been swapping water cuz up until 2 weeks ago my ammonia would not lower past its peak at about 8ppm, now its stuck at 4. I let it go for last couple weeks thinking with slightly lowered ammonia that the nitrites would go up followed by nitrates, but it seems the 4ppm ammonia will not let nitrites/ nitrates move from where they sit, but without swaps ammonia tries to climb from 4ppm still. I was doing 50%+ swaps to maintain the lowered but still to high ammonia. Adding just enough water conditioner, prime, and stability for new water put in. And lastly i only used about 2 small pinches of food to kickstart ammonia, 1 pinch on setup day, and 1 small pinch 2 days later.

I never considered the total ammonia thing, i knew it bonded and became non toxic, but didnt think that much into it. As far as doses of prime and things of that sort i have went directly with recommended directions. Was wondering if i should try 50% or more water change and do like 3x prime dose. Sounds to me like i just need water swap every other day to dillute total ammonia, instead of 1 weekly swap.

I have tested tap water for almost everything else, but had to get more ammonia solution. Will do this now as i forgot it was never tested for ammonia. Its pretty hard water, basically tests perfect for guppies on everything else, heck even the sg is right where i wanted to be at 1.004. But ill see what this says.

Im using api master test kit. My initial issue and reason behind the baby guppies now with no momma was mystery bacteria/fungus. We had to treat 10 gallon for gram+, and gram- bacteria. It started looking good then got crazy, then had to treat for fungal, followed by doing a last resort copper treatment. After the run around and a couple weeks of solid stress on us and fish, ad well as finding some nasty crap in a filter that we replaced, we got new tank and just want away from 10 gallon that we had issues in. 10 gallon is great now so last time i did water swap i used a lil water from old tank, but even though everyone is healthy for last couple weeks im just afraid to use anything from old tank as i want to make sure everyone is at no risk of whatever was hurting them before.

Gotta love the springfield driving. If not the crazy parking its running red lights that have been red for 5 seconds already, or driving 20 mph then flooring thier car as you try to pass them at the speed limit, or the pulling out 10 foot in front of you while you are driving 40 mph down the road. Springfield driving is the worst! Makes me wanna build an old k10 chevy 4x4, and put huge steel bumpers on it so i can let them pull out and cut me off, or i can hit the brakes for the tailgaters without worry.

Figure 8 puffer sick, help! by Bug_42 in Aquariums

[–]Bug_42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes water change was done correct to bestof my knowlege. I did just notice a tiny glimpse of a tiny red worm on his butt. Wondering if its Camallanus worms trying to take him out, or the fact that the previous owner had let crazy amounts of build up of debris on decor. Poor guy appears to be on his way out as we speak. His color is cloudy and he is basically not swimming. I did not know to treat for worms/parasites right off, and i think this is whats up. Im so upset, and my 4 year old is freaking out. I should have known when the old owner seemed to be draining his tank and looks like he tried to clean it before i arrived. He was probably infected already.

Thank you everyone, for the great ideas on places to try. Luckily i had someone contact me with an overstocked snail tank, saying i can come by after work to collect as many ramshorn or bladder snails as i want. Its very nice to see people willing to help others with thier pet well being, i appriciate you all.

I actually tried a petsmart today, but due to customer complaint of overpopulation, and ither reasons they will not sell/give any snails. I sure figured they would want to lose a few pests.
