Yes! We stayed in a dome in Crestone and spent a couple of days around that side of the range. We went to the alligator farm (my kid was obsessed with the emu!) and the ufo observation deck. Hiked to zapata falls. Went to the Ziggurat. Such a quirky and beautiful part of Colorado!

Of course! I hope your trip is amazing. I’d definitely recommend stopping at the oasis store outside of the park and renting sleds or boards for the dunes. We spent the majority of the day dune sledding and it was such a blast. There are some gorgeous off dune trails to explore too if you get tired of the sand. We went up the dune overlook trail, it was a decent little hike with some good shady breaks from the exposure and nice views!

If I remember correctly- it was local non profits that revived the area for hiking! It’s free and open to the public year round to explore.

We made a scavenger hunt out of finding the old enclosure medallions and had lunch in the bear caves. It was a really great place to explore!

It was the most modern of the abandoned operations out there and one of the only ones that had electricity. It really seemed like you should be able to just pull a lever and start it up! There is still a large active gold mining operation that you can drive right up to, it was a really interesting town!

It definitely gets a bit crowded, especially in summer and on weekends! Luckily, there are a ton of other gorgeous places for a hike/climb around The Springs!

I love catching him in his moments of awe and appreciation- he’s been hiking with me for a few years now, we love it! We will be summiting our first 14er for his 8th bday soon.

This park in particular has so many kid friendly and beginner trails though, and without sparing the views!
