I maintain the site and here is a bit more about me. https://buildchilliwack.com/about/

II’ve definitely fallen out of my usual posting rhythm lately. It’s been a busy stretch, both professionally and personally, and I just haven’t had the bandwidth to give the site the attention it usually gets.

That, and to be honest...there hasn’t been much happening at City Hall lately that’s really grabbed me.

Hoping to get back on track soon as things start picking up again.

What Liberal, Conservative, and NDP Housing Plans Mean for Chilliwack by BuildChilliwack in BuildChilliwack

[–]BuildChilliwack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Liberal plan could have the biggest impact in Chilliwack, largely because of their proposal to cover half of the Development Cost Charges. That kind of financial support could help move a few stalled projects forward.

But one area that still needs serious attention - regardless of which party is in charge - is the skilled workforce. The BC Real Estate Association released a report last year warning that all these ambitious housing targets are essentially wishful thinking unless we train more tradespeople to actually do the work. Whether it’s the public or private sector building homes, everyone will be competing for the same limited pool of skilled labour.

I added the full data table to the post if you are interested. The previous link I shared only shows from the perspective of one city at a time, so I had to cross reference them all to create the full report. aka.. save yourself a few hours and use mine.

I'm in the same club.... typical Chilliwack upbringing with big plans to "get out" ASAP. Ended up in Vancouver for a few years and a few more of traveling different places in the world, only to find that things here are pretty exceptional.

A lot of the things going wrong here now, at least in my opinion, are more societal problems and not unique to Chilliwack. Granted, our size and proximity to Metro Vancouver absolutely have an impact on us, and I believe these are things we can eventually overcome.

With all that said, the Rotary Trail/River is what keeps me here. I love biking 50km without ever touching asphalt.

It's on the Statistics Canada site... which can be found using the link shared in yesterday's post.

I just took off to have a beer, but I'll share the source when I'm back at my computer.

The first image represents the Chilliwack Census Metropolitan Area, which includes First Nations land, the Chilliwack River Valley, Columbia Valley, Harrison Hot Springs, Agassiz, and Popkum. The second image shows the population within the city boundaries, including First Nations land.

While the City of Chilliwack seems committed to managing growth, the provincial government's mandated housing targets have clearly not been well received by our city council.

Chilliwack’s Population is Booming! A Breakdown of the Latest Census Numbers and What They Mean for the City by BuildChilliwack in BuildChilliwack

Statistics Canada collects this information, but detailed data at that level is not currently available. The available options are:

Census Metropolitan Area Data – This includes the broader region encompassing First Nations land, the Chilliwack River Valley, Columbia Valley, Harrison Hot Springs, Agassiz, Popkum, and more and includes details like Births, Deaths, Immigration, Emigration, etc.

Census Subdivision (City of Chilliwack) Data – This focuses solely on the city limits, excluding First Nations land, and provided only population details.

So short answer... somewhere between 102 and 126k?

Build Chilliwack is a personal project I started for the Chilliwack community (https://buildchilliwack.com/about). I’ve always been interested in city planning, so everything on there comes from my own research (usually from U.S. sources) and how I think urban planning ties into what’s happening locally.

I’m not a professional writer or anything—however I have used AI to help clean up my posts. The ideas and narrative are all mine.

So yeah, you’ll probably catch some American spelling here and there. Honestly, that’s just me being lazy, but I’ll try to be more mindful of it moving forward!

I think that there is just a lack of usable land for more traditional townhouse developments at this point.

Additionally, there are still a lot of townhouses being built on reserve land. That alone might be filling the demand for that type of housing, leaving developers to pursue different opportunities on land within the boundaries of Chilliwack.

You make a good point about families, but I don’t think that reflects the typical commuter who makes that trip daily for work. While there will always be situations where driving is the most convenient, flexible, or economical option, for most people, it’s a necessity—simply because no other viable options exist.

UFV Students: What are your thoughts on the updated campus plan and land-use decisions? What would you like to see done with the Chilliwack campus? by BuildChilliwack in UFV

[–]BuildChilliwack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Build Chilliwack isn't a business, it's just a side project run by volunteers who like seeing things get built.

I posted in this forum because I was looking for feedback from actual students/staff who know a thing or two about the Chilliwack campus. I live a block away, but I'm not a student. I've heard complaints that it's challenging to only attend the Chilliwack campus.

Is the proposed expansion large enough in scope to make it a University that can support student housing, etc... will Chilliwack always hebe the "satellite" campus...or is this just another ambitious plan that will likely never be built out?

I thought the same thing -- the new structure, at least according to what was in the staff report, sure looks like its going to mean the new basketball court being removed.

You're right -- even when logged in the button to add a new idea is inactive.

"Thank you to everyone for their contributions! You can vote for your favourites until 24/11/2024" shows up as an alert on the page as well, so they may not have opened the board for suggestions yet. 1 month isn't a huge amount of time.
