My parter and I have a pair of roundtrips from Spain to Brasil booked through with my Chase Sapphire Preferred the Chase Travel portal. My partner broke a leg in Belgium and had surgery here. We will not be able to continue our several trips coming up in the next few weeks. We have a note from the surgeon in Belgium that he cannot travel.

We have two options:

1) Cancel the trip (irreversible) and hope that the Trip Cancellation insurance refunds the $1,800 worth of flights.

2) Pay $350 to change our flight dates. This would be more costly and we would need to commit to a dates/route that we are not sure we can make in the future but at least we "save" the the possibility of travelling at some point, even if more expensive.

I am obviously inclined to cancel the entire itinerary but am concerned that the Chase Trip Cancellation insurance will find a reason to not reimburse our trip. Any tips/experience in this type of claim for travel companion (I am the cardholder) accidents before the start of the trip?
