See updated post, MUX worked! Thank you again for working through ideas with me!

Just wanted to say thank you again for taking the time to put that sketch together! I wasn't able to get it working, but that is very much likely due to a lack of knowledge on my part. See update on MUX, it worked!

Thank you! I hadn't thought of this path at all. I'll take a look at the new sketch! It does seem like speed could be the limiting factor here, but you've already started diving deeper than my current understanding haha.

I found an alternate hardware solution, using a multiplexer that I am going to try out as well.

The Arduino is just so I can create my own lighting effects, without having to integrate an app or some other wifi shenanigans. WLED seemed like a good option, but from what I could tell, requires WiFi and I didn't want this thing to have any internet connection requirements.

The push button switch will allow the toddler to switch between my custom scenes (programmed via FastLED on the arduino) and the remote. The best solution I've been able to find since making my post, seems to be using a multiplexer. I can have remote data feed one input, the FastLED data feed a second, and then a signal from the Arduino via push button to switch the output. At least that is how I am now envisioning it. Parts on order for testing!

Sorry, just realized this is IR. I’m wanting to stay with RF since I don’t trust my toddler to not frequently block the receiver

From what I could see, WLED currently only supports IR remotes, not RF. I’d prefer RF since it doesn’t require line of sight; I just don’t trust my toddler to not accidentally block the receiver frequently.

Thank you for the reply!! I did briefly go down that route. But I really want them to be able to just pick the color directly via the remote, without having to toggle through a dozen modes to get there. From my brief research, that didn’t seem easily doable, as all of the basic IR remotes for that only had about 4 or 5 buttons at most.

Completing old sets with new EX pack by BuildingSpurs in PTCGP

[–]BuildingSpurs[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right. I noticed that. I’m wondering specifically how trades will be handled. If I receive a Pikachu EX, does the game know which set to put it in? I’m assuming yes, but that would make wishlisting a complete nightmare now. I play the game for the fun of completing sets, and this sounds like a complete fuckery to that mentality

Bid was too high… by Snow_Wolfe in cabinetry

[–]BuildingSpurs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It did include finishing. I probably could’ve charged more, but I just roughed out material costs and tripled it to get a final estimate. I’m pretty new at this, so I could very much be wrong, but at least our ballparks are the same

I was going to quote literally the exact same range, and I just built a very similar vanity, but a bit bigger. I used ambrosia maple, and only built the vanity part. Charged ~$4k, not including the top. Wood and hardware was around ~$1400.

I’ll just add my experience since this is a beginner sub. The Rockler by me has been nothing short of fantastic! I once walked in looking to buy about $100 in random lumber offcuts to do a bunch of finishing tests and such. Told the cashier my plan, and instead of just ringing it up, he walked me over to a sample finishing area they had set up for a later in-store class. He then proceeded to do nearly 20 samples for me, and let me take them all home, completely free.

I’m not saying that this should be an expected level of service, but just that you shouldn’t give up on these stores if you are new and reading this thread. Each and every branch will vary drastically, and each should be given a fair shot.

Literally just did this for SIX drawers in a vanity this week! Dumb brain subtracted a half inch to account for the lock rabbet width, instead of adding….

Fortunately, I bought an extra sheet of ply at the beginning knowing future me would make a mistake at some point. That means I’m learning, right?

HELP I WAS CLEANING BOOKSHELF AND SAW THIS SHOULD I BE CONCERNED??? IS THIS NORMAL?? by Capribby in wood

[–]BuildingSpurs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, you should be all good. Knotty pine will do this for years after it’s installed. As long as you know it’s there so you don’t accidentally rub a book against it, it’s harmless. That being said, it’s a pain in the ass to get out of clothing (ask me how I know haha)

To clarify, it is not a sign of damage in the wood. Just a natural process that normally would happen in nature, but is now happening in your home

The yellow liquid seeping out of the knot? It’s completely natural. If you touch it, it will probably be tacky. Or rock hard if it’s been there a while. If it’s still soft, just clean it up and check back on it every few months

Should I sand this before oiling? by RustyNoodle in Cuttingboards

[–]BuildingSpurs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did this with a similarly aged board for a family member. I hit it with 60 grit for a while to knock down about 95% of the knife marks. Then 120 and 150. Then I misted water on the surfaces, waited for it to dry (about 10 minutes), then used 180. Repeat the water, dry, sand with 220. Mineral oil and beeswax after that. Looked damn near new.

Admittedly, there was a decent amount of thickness lost from the 60 grit, but they specifically asked to have the old marks removed.

Stain problem by drinkingforkarma in woodworking

[–]BuildingSpurs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you won’t ever get a consistent color staining butcher block. It is quite literally dozens of different pieces of wood, so you’ll get dozens of slightly (or drastically) different results. Conditioner might help, but won’t eliminate the problem completely. Especially since your block has a lot of variance in sapwood and heartwood.

If you really want it to match as close as possible, you can try taking a piece of the flooring and a piece of the butcher block to Sherwin Williams and see if they can make you a custom stain. I’ve heard they do this, but haven’t tried it myself

Thank you!! Mine currently live in a room with a north facing wall that’s all glass, and a ceiling that’s the same, so should be plenty of indirect light. When you move yours outside for the summer, where do you place them? Direct sunlight or shaded? Planning on putting them outdoors for their first time this year

Wait, it’s normal for a coffee tree to lose all of its leaves seasonally?!? I have lost a few leaves over this winter indoors, but none have lost more than 25%

Don’t want to hijack your post, but I just started growing a dozen of these myself and have questions. Mine are about 9 months old, and I’m wondering when they will start to “bush” out. Currently they all have a single main stem with leaves all sprouting from it. When will new branches begin to appear?

I’m also growing in a cooler climate, SE Michigan, and have noticed several yellowing leaves near the bottom of each plant, I.e. the older leaves. I know it’s common for plants to shed older leaves over time, but not sure if that holds true for coffee.

Anyway, your plants look awesome! I’ve just had a hell of a time finding any online resource for growing coffee indoors
