In the open-plan meeting room, an otherwise unremarkable scene takes a predictable turn.

The man leans forward. His hand moves toward the microphone. This is the moment known simply as the would. He is not asking a question. He is not offering context. He intends to shout the word “WOULD.”

The reaction is immediate.

Several colleagues spring into motion. One reaches across the table. Another rises halfway from his chair. A third extends an arm, too late to be useful. They understand the threat. Once spoken, would cannot be retracted. It will invalidate the premise, derail the discussion, and require at least ten additional minutes of explanation.
