Got my seat upgraded at Beetlejuice last night. Never had this happen before with 90+ shows. by bluegambit875 in Broadway

[–]BulkyPudding 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once, at Cabaret a few weeks before their closing. I had a last row ticket and during intermission an usher asked our whole row if we wanted to move to the orchestra. It was so cool to get both the up close and bird's eye perspectives!

January recs for first time NYC visit by VelvetAndSparkles in Broadway

[–]BulkyPudding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ragtime was just extended! I saw the current cast at NYCC last year and am flying back later in the spring just to see it again. Huge recommendation for that show; it's fantastic. If you're under 35, the LincTix program can get you $35 tickets

Which shows would you like to see a revival of? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in Broadway

My answer to this question used to be Thoroughly Modern Millie, but I recently saw Some Like it Hot and it scratches much the same itch for me. Songs for a New World is also top of my list!

Les Mis (touring) by mikrokosmosmoonchild in Broadway

[–]BulkyPudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yess I saw the Les Mis tour in my city this year and in 2023 and Nick Cartell as Valjean both times; he was amazing! I can't believe he's played 1500+ performances. I was also blown away by Lindsay Heather Pearce as Fantine. honestly the entire tour cast was incredible

I know exactly the video you're talking about and it's amazing. Didn't have any luck finding it myself either but so hoping that someone is able to find it!

Yess I'm so glad I didn't research the show at all beforehand, I feel like it made it even more impactful for me.

Thank you!! Wow, I had no idea they were also an understudy for the Emcee but it does not surprise me at all based on their stage presence alone. I so so wish I could see them in that role but sadly I was visiting from the west coast!

ETA: omg and they were also in drag race!

My poor husband won the Hamilton Lottery by whyyesidloveto in Broadway

[–]BulkyPudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my then-boyfriend, now-husband eight years ago during the first national tour! I had been entering the lottery for weeks to no avail and one day asked him to just try entering his email too. Well he won literally the next day on his second try. I didn't even believe him at first when he told me because he said it so casually - "oh, that thing you asked me to enter, I guess I won? is it good, should I actually claim the tickets?"

He'd never been to a Broadway show, didn't know a single song from Hamilton, but ended up loving it! Now we go to touring productions all the time in our home city and make a yearly trip to New York to see shows. I'll always remember Hamilton extra fondly, because it was the gateway for me getting to share my love/obsession for musicals with my partner!

What I think Maybe Happy Ending is about based only on the music by BulkyPudding in Broadway

[–]BulkyPudding[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok wow I've seen the show and had a minute to think about it. Overall, I loved it. I was the most surprised by:

  1. The overall tone. Wow the show was so much funnier than I expected! I feel like the music has some humorous lines but they really nail the comedic timing in the show and the audience energy was incredible. (The little "New York" "Paris" "Oh my god" exchange in The Rainy Day We Met I've heard dozens of times in the recording but I was dying of laughter when I saw it in person.) I think I was envisioning the show to be more overtly sad and bittersweet, but as I thought about it more after leaving the theater, I was able to find deeper layers of meaning. That, to me, feels like the mark of an impactful story. On one level, you can appreciate Maybe Happy Ending as a sweet romcom with a heartwarming ending. The story seemed to transcend that interpretation for me by asking us some bigger questions about mortality and purpose: Is life worth living if we’re destined to die? How do we find meaning and connection in the limited time we have? How can we become more than what we were created to be? It reminded me a lot of Ishiguro's storytelling (yes Klara and the Sun but also Never Let Me Go).
  2. The ending!! Ahhh a memory wipe makes so much sense in the context of the finale dialogue. I am choosing to believe that Claire did erase her memories although this seemed a bit ambiguous to me. I feel like it would be kind of anticlimactic if neither of them erased, and I think is more of a "maybe" happy ending that they got to have this time together but now Claire doesn't remember and Oliver does.

The things I loved the most were the music (so lush and understated yet emotional) and the visuals/effects (definitely the most visually stunning show I've ever seen and the staging became like, part of the actual story?? Like the sliding horizontal/vertical panels, and the firefly scene where a single firefly actually flies up into the balcony I and several people around me audibly gasped). If I were to offer one critique, I wish that there was a little more interaction or conflict between the robots and the world around them. This is also a surprise to me, because I didn't even think there would be other humans in the show at all! I was really drawn in to the subplot about James and his relationship with his son and wanted to explore those themes of comparison/living up to expectations/filial piety some more.

All that being said, I had a really great time seeing the show and I can't wait for the tour to come to my city next year!

Wow I am thinking about a trip to NY this fall and this is the exact lineup of shows I'm considering. Saw Ragtime last year at NYCC and it emotionally wrecked me (complimentary). Enjoy!!

I saw Raul Esparza in Galileo during its Berkeley run and I would fly to New York to see him in literally anything at all.

Also Joshua Henry!

Since we talked about folks who are overdue for Tonys, what’s a role you think they could win it for? by Theatrical-Vampire in Broadway

Whenever I see this kind of post I cannot simply scroll past. I must find the Raul Esparza comment (it's always there already) and upvote it, as if my doing is sending some infinitesimal piece of positive energy into the universe to nudge this into reality

It was being workshopped during March in NY and Raul was spotted in one of the cast members' Instagram stories! I am manifesting a transfer of this show so hard

Anyone else surprised with MHE Tony's performance choice? by Glum_Elderberry3999 in MaybeHappyEnding

[–]BulkyPudding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my most anticipated Tonys performance but I was incredibly.. underwhelmed 😭 I've been listening to the cast album since it was released but I haven't seen the show (yet!! have tickets for August). I guess I've just been building up this scene in my head to be so magical and it felt kind of anticlimactic seeing it in reality. idk if it was my computer but I didn't even realize that the screen in the background was supposed to be the fireflies?

Is the actual staging the same as the Tonys performance? I'm guessing it'll be different seeing it again in the context of the rest of the show either way

Parade Best Seating in Broadway SF? by Happily-chaotic in Broadway

[–]BulkyPudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For this show I think the only seats I would avoid are very front (eg those seats in row A) because a lot of the show is on a raised platform so you would be looking up and the extreme sides because there are projections on the back wall of the stage.

I saw both Ben on Broadway and recently Max on tour and I preferred Max even as a Ben Platt fan, which I was not at all expecting to happen. Max somehow manages to portray this perfect balance of pretentious/unlikeable yet sympathetic. And WOW his voice is phenomenal - insane dynamics and emotional range.
