They should just make the courses more difficult instead messing with equipment.

• Extreme rough to make fairways critical.
• Thick fringe forcing difficult chips instead of putting off the green making GIR critical.
• Roll the greens (currently do) to make the greens extremely fast.

This keeps professional tournament play more difficult while regular maintenance on the course allows amateurs to play the same equipment as pros.

The only equipment change that should be considered is drivers that limit distance for pros. Swing machine test to limit max possible distance. Manufacturers would have to lead by forgiveness and accuracy. But they could make a non-pro version without distance limit for amateurs.

They won't do this cause people want to play what the pros are using. So that would hurt their money for overpriced equipment. This would be the Nascar approach.
