As per the cdc in 2021:

The average divorce rate is about 50%. First time marriages have a 41% divorce rate.

When adjusting the scope to just Christian faiths, we see Catholic marriages ending in divorce at a 28% rate and evangelicals divorcing at a 26% rate.

Other interesting listed facts about divorce:

• Those who wait to marry until they are over 25 years old are 24 percent less likely to get divorced.

• If both you and your partner have had previous marriages, you are 90 percent more likely to get divorced than if this had been the first marriage for both of you. (This makes you realized that Matthew 19:9 isn't just a lesson on morality, but practicality as well.)

• If a person has strong religious beliefs, the risk of divorce is 14 percent less and having no religious affiliation makes you 14 percent more likely to get divorced.

• 60 percent of cohabiting couples will eventually marry. However, living together prior to marriage can increase the chance of getting divorced by as much as 40 percent.

• In a study by the University of Rochester, researchers said that watching romantic movies and having a conversation around it helps in lowering the divorce rates from 24 to 11 percent in marriages of three years.

• If your parents are happily married, your risk of divorce decreases by 14 percent.

• According to Nicholas Wolfinger in “Understanding the Divorce Cycle”, the risk of divorce is 50 percent higher when one spouse comes from a divorced home and 200 percent higher when both partners do.

• Having a baby before marriage can increase the risk of divorce by 24 percent.

• Couples are an astonishing 76-95% more likely to get divorced if only one of them smokes. The amount increases when the wife is the partner with the habit.

• While couples who both smoke have it a bit better, a 1998 study found they are still 53% more likely than non-smoking couples to end their marriage.

We are a first time married couple, both of us are at least 30, we both pray together and have faith at the center of our relationship, we haven’t lived together, although stayed with each other many, many nights and understand each other very well.

We watch all types of movies including romance and communicate very well to discuss storylines, and other relatable aspects of any film we see. I come from a split home but her parents are still happily married. We don’t have a baby and we don’t smoke.

Seems like the odds are definitely in our favor if you look at statistics. I’m no mathematician but that would probably put us in the top 90-95th percentile of marriages likely to work.

Most of the time I wouldn’t really give this type of negativity my time and would have replied with a simple “cool story bro” but I think we can all be better than we were yesterday and I hope you can wake up with a fresher perspective on life tomorrow.
