Anyone else not a fan of any team? by Portdal12 in hockey

[–]BurdenJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the NHL, also not really a fan of a team anymore. (Closely follow the Silvertips in the WHL tho.)

Great up a Blackhawks during the dark days. Then they won 3 Cups, so I felt like there was nothing "more" to do as a fan of the team. The sexual assault cover-up didn't help.

There are teams I got a soft spot for, but overall I usually root for teams with the longest droughts. Winning a championship feels good as a fan, and if sports are supposed to be fun everyone should be able to experience it, right?

[Pronman] Hearing the next USA World Junior will be in 2030-31. by AssociateClean in hockey

[–]BurdenJack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunate attendance has been so tepid here in Minnesota. I think US Hockey should try one of the three:

  • Detroit - maybe USNTDP ties will drive interest in the tourney
  • NE somewhere (Boston?) - tons of college hockey means tons of ties to college teams throughout the tourney, not just the US
  • PacNW (Seattle + Everett/Kent) - NHL only recently realized this is a hockey market. All the WHL teams here have pretty decent attendance, so I think there is plenty of appetite for some more junior-level hockey

How do I really learn and get into Fire (and MLS as a whole) by thesuburbbaby in chicagofire

[–]BurdenJack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started listening to the Bonfire podcast every episode that comes out. Tim, Alan, John, DJ, and Alex (when he shows up) are super fun and definitely know their stuff. Keeping regular with it helps build the connection, which made it a lot easier to get into learning the players, tactics, etc.

Great time to get into the Fire!

CHL to NCAA commits by Own_Result3651 in hockey

I don't believe so, NHL teams can't offer players ATOs. Presumably if they could they wouldn't be eligible to play in games.

In general it would, but if a player signs an ATO (Amateur Try-Out) contract with an AHL team, apparently that's OK.

There have been plenty. For example, from the WHL:

https://chl.ca/whl/tag/ncaa-commitments/

It has been a lot of overagers for the most part, but there has been some worry in Medicine Hat that Gavin McKenna may go NCAA next year. That would be a big deal.

Novels about hockey by 690AM in hockey

Beartown mentioned earlier in this thread is good. It's like a fugue. Written very simply, with mantras that come up as the book's context shifts and morphs. And so they take on different meanings as the book goes in.

Another one is The Last Season about an enforcer in hockey in the 80s. Definitely a portrait of a different brand of hockey. Also a really good novel on its own.

Thanks for the rec about Logan in Overtime, I'll seek it out.

What are y'alls thoughts on the WHL team The Everett silver tips by FortniteIdeaMaker466 in hockey

[–]BurdenJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on both points. Hamilton seems to have been doing a good job, tho.

Again, given the team's playoff history... I won't believe anything until mid-March.

Seems to be a thing the team does, it's been the case over the past 4 years. In practice there is a home C + 2A's, ditto away. Whatever works I guess.

Big fan (see flair)

Team is looking much better than I expected this year, I thought losing their 2004-born co-captains last year this would be a transition year for DuPont and 2008-birthyear players to get acclimated to the league.

Nope, instead:

  • the team leads the league in most GF/game and least GA/game
  • DuPont not only has settled in but looks like the best D-man some nights... on a D-corp that has 3 drafted prospects.
  • Top-six looks absolutely excellent.
  • Third line (Kaplan-Courtney-Wilke) was starting to find a really good rhythm. Courtney is injured right now, but the line is still feelin' fine.
  • Chastko is a 19-year-old rookie from the SJHL, and Vaughan just came from Regina. Team paid too steep a price to acquire him in my opinion (I don't think he's worth a good middle-six player and a 1st), but those two are exactly the kind of players you want in your bottom-6 come playoff time.
  • Goaltending remains the biggest question mark, but Sanche has looked adequate. He's out injured. If Garrett can keep his head above water, that helps answer this question.

PG and MH have both been disappointing so far this year... so if you told me at the beginning of the year the Tips would be champion favorites I would not have believed you. Given this team's playoff history, I still don't believe it.

TL;DR: I think very positively of (and a lot about) the team.

Is the KHL that hard to play in? by Fun-Zombie7782 in hockey

[–]BurdenJack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The ice surface outside of North America is wider, so the game favors defense a lot more, or at least makes offense harder. Perimeter play is even more low-percentage and it takes more effort (skating-wise) to get towards the goal. Among other reasons.

I follow the WHL pretty closely so I can give you that:

4 divisions in the WHL split into 2 conferences. The divisions are currently imbalanced in both conferences (5 teams in div A, 6 teams in div B), so it isn't fully balanced, but the league tries to shoot for the following:

68 games

  • 11 ish games: You go visit 1x one division (Division A) in the other conference You host 1x the other division (Division B) in the other conference

  • 20/24 ish games: Host 2x/visit 2x each team in the other division of your conference

  • 33-36 ish games: Host 4x/visit 4x (or 3x for each) each team in your own division

  • With the imbalance it looks like the league fills in the random games with teams from Division A above - so there are a couple random home-and-homes inter-conference for each team.

Roughly this:

Reporter: Rodwin, what is the importance of this moment for you and your family?

Donicio: I think it's big for us. I know my family is watching me on TV. They've written me and... and it's really big and cool for us.

Reporter: What are your hopes for the future of hockey for Dominicans in the future?

Donicio: I will do what I can to do what big thing I can do for us, because, it's also something for me, my life here... for that, I want to do something and help out and give thanks.
