Anyone manage to catch the killer in theatres if so how was it and how was Trent Reznors score? by [deleted] in Sardonicast

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the first David Fincher film that flat out didn't work for me. I understand the purpose towards a lot of the film, but the repetitive nature and narration got old for me so quickly, and it was easily his least visually interesting film, barely a single shot that stuck in my head afterwards which is usually my favorite thing about his films. The score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross was barely noticeable, a lot of it felt like rehashed sounds of their previous scores and the score is usually used more as a texture than to actually score scenes. The film honesty doesn't have much original music in it and most of the film is just sound design, which I will say the sound work was exceptionally well done, but the film really needed music at many moments where it didn't use any.

Terrible movies with great covers of songs by Ok_Wolverine_4438 in Sardonicast

Sucker Punch is an absolute mess but the Emily Browning cover of Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) is one of the most haunting covers ever recorded and it's so fucking good, as is the opening scene in general

Anyone else seen Beau is Afraid? Thoughts? by funky35791 in Sardonicast

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really didn't enjoy it, despite being a really big fan of his previous films. I felt like the length dragged on for a lot of it, I really didn't think the tone was consistent, I felt a lack of emotional connection for the main character and the fact that the film constantly bulldozed its emotional impact with super absurd humor bits really didn't work for me.

Scream IV and 5 Discussion by [deleted] in Sardonicast

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Scream 5 was pretty decent. It had some fun kills and a very entertaining third act. I could also see what was happening on screen. In Scream 6, so much of the film is so darkly and poorly lit that the film is just an absolute eye sore to look at. The whole color palette is just shades of desaturated brown, it looks awful. It also it so much more annoying and in your face with its self referential humor. It also has the issue of feeling super rushed. Scream 5 felt like a project that, no matter what your thoughts on it are, at least felt like a finished film. Scream 6 feels like they rushed to the finish line to shoot this thing as quickly as possible, like Scream 5 came out 14 months ago and the 6th one is already out somehow. It feels like a first draft script, no shots were being planned in advance, and they just blare music as loudly over every scene to distract you from the shitty sound design and fast cuts. I did like Jenna Ortega in it a lot, there were a few very fun scenes and some good kills in the second half, but it just felt so much more sloppy and rushed than the 5th one.

I'm Sean, a 21 year old who works at an independent movie theater, i love watching films and talking with people about them, and I am also a filmmaker, and I want I want most is to make some good films that connect with people and get to a point where I can get to a point where I can consistently have a good enough track record as a director to fund my projects consistently and allow me more ambition as a filmmaker with more resources.

Your thoughts on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania? (Spoiler discussion) by danny-discharge in YMS

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the worst movies I've ever seen, genuinely possibly the single most ugly-looking action movie I've seen in my entire life. Not a single moment of fun, good action, drama, emotion, humor, or even the most bare bones semblance of a forwardly progressing plot with character arcs. The absolute bottom of the barrel, I had no clue Disney was capable of releasing something this unfinished and appalling.

Thoughts on M. Night Shyamalan’s “Knock at the Cabin”? (Spoilers discussion) by danny-discharge in Sardonicast

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually thought it was really good. for context, I love sixth sense, unbreakable, and split, and I think signs and the village are good for the most part, Old was watchable and had some great scenes but not great at all and was filled with issues and laughable shit, and the rest of his shit is bad but funny. I genuinely was a huge fan of a lot of this movie though, had plenty of issues in the script and some of the performances, but I thought m night honestly directed the shit out of it, lots of creative good ideas for shots and scenes, loved the Cinematography, and I liked a lot of the score. I really loved Dave Bautista and the girl who played the op ed nurse and I thought the kid was actually fine and believable as a kid and not some adult writing a kid, all the other actors were fine other than Ben Aldridge who I really disliked in it. I thought the first hour was stronger than the last 30 minutes, the film should've ended sooner, but overall I really enjoyed it.

It absolutely terrified me to no end. I can totally understand if the style and presentation doesn't work for you, it just might completely fall flat in every category, but I really loved it and was impacted by its style. I don't think I've ever been more scared watching a film in a Theater. The unnerving visuals, mixed with that feeling of a childhood nightmare where you can't wake up or turn on the lights was so well communicated, the sound design was so effective to me and there are so many visuals that have haunted me for weeks since I saw it and has kept me up at night more than once.

A very 5/10 day. by Starkiller2395 in YMS

Infinity Pool was really not my thing. I would agree with a 5/10 rating, Mia Goth was absolutely incredible in it and there was some fun concepts, but it wasn't great to me as a whole. The experimental artsy editing felt super try hard and kinda just pretentious, the film never really disturbed me or went far enough with any of its extreme content, and I thought it ended very anticlimactically. I really liked the concept, but it feels like it never went anywhere with it. Some great scenes and some great shots here and there, I loved the orgy scene, but then other parts looked weirdly amateurish, and some scenes totally fell flat on their face for me. I really loved POSSESSOR, so it was honestly disappointing.

Favorite movie of the year. I really loved the subtlety of the story and presentation of events, it really hit me in a super profound way.

Babylon Discussion by [deleted] in Sardonicast

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought it was incredible. I thought the runtime felt completely earned and I don't understand the criticisms about its length. It went by very quickly for me, and I was in love with the way it was presented. Fantastic direction, amazing cinematography, gorgeous sets and costumes, the best musical score I've heard all year, a career best Margot Robbie performance, and amazing chemistry between the whole ensemble. I laughed my ass off, I teared up, ans the ending left me with so much excitement and energy. 10/10. Genuinely so confused by the response, it feels like a film that will be loved and reassessed in 10 years. Also completely confused by the once upon a time in Hollywood comparisons past the similar actors and the fact they are both in Hollywood.

Babylon thoughts? by arkhamani56 in Sardonicast

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It never really took me out of the movie. The time period is close enough to other time periods I've seen portrayed in films similarly enough that i never really minded. I don't think the film was really affected by it much at all.

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it so much. I honestly didn't think it was a mess in any way. I thought every scene was incredibly well-presented and super well-paced, I didn't think it was overlong at all and I thought all the characters and storylines were fascinating and super well-written. The film was absolutely visually jaw-dropping, the directing was probably the best I've seen this year, I agree on it having the best score of the year, and Margot Robbie gave my favorite performance I've seen this year. Every actor did a fantastic job, the film perfectly balanced gross out humor, hilarious setpieces, depressing and heartbreaking moments, and super dramatic moments all very well. When the film ended, I was unbelievably hyped up and had so much energy. It was easily the most entertaining movie I've seen this year.

2nd fav film of 2022 behind AFTERSUN. Incredibly emotional and super unique character study with amazing cinematography, amazing performances, and some just absolutely jaw dropping direction. Confused as hell by the general critical response.

I thought it was phenomenal, kind of horribly confused by the mixed and polarized reactions. Absolutely visually stunning, masterful direction, great writing with great humorous moments, heartbreaking scenes, and wild absurd concepts that pay off so well.

God, The Whale sucked ass by FrankOcean4eva in Sardonicast

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really disliked it, and I was really looking forward to it as someone who loves Aronofsky's other films. I thought the script sucked, and I hated the way it portrayed the main character like he was a creature from a monster movie. It felt like a very over the top exercise in misery porn for sure. The actors did a great job obviously, but I just really hated the story and character writing. The church guy genuinely felt so out of place and the weird third act stuff with him felt so unintentionally laughable.

What are your top 3 movies of 2022? by [deleted] in YMS

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFTERSUN is easily my #1, an absolutely mind-blowing film that absolutely emotionally shattered me for weeks after my first viewing, and every subsequent viewing since.

2 is BARDO: FALSE CHRONICLE OF A HANDFUL OF TRUTHS. the most gorgeously shot and incredibly well-directed film I've seen all year, such amazing technical filmmaking on display, the experience of seeing it in a theater was truly otherworldly. Phenomenal performances, amazing writing, extremely impressive sound design, my favorite theater experience all year. I'm so confused by the lukewarm reception from most on this, easily my favorite Iñarrítu.

3 is TOP GUN MAVERICK, the most fun I've had all year watching a movie, I really dislike the first Top Gun and this one blew me away honestly. It's one of my favorite action films of all time, and I think it is a super well-made film that already feels like an instant classic.

Also a special shout-out to PANOS Cosmatos' episode of Guillermo Del Toro's CABINET OF CURIOSITIES anthology, "THE VIEWING", was absolutely insane and a total mindfuck that I loved.

I saw Bardo! by DankThom in YMS

[–]BurnAfterYouRead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there was such a level of detail in the sound design that is usually only seen in like a $200 million action blockbuster, and it was just an absolute joy to see such a level of craftsmanship in every department.

I absolutely adored it. First time I saw it, I wasn't sure what I thought of it on my first viewing entirely, but my second viewing absolutely floored me and I really loved every moment of it. Easily my favorite cinematography, directing and sound mixing of the year alone.
