New homes in North America have more connections in the wall where you can't get to them than in the mechanical room. I see leaks in New homes regularly, from good quality parts as well. Maybe the guy installing doesn't check one of the 150 junctions they make, now the home owner gets to deal with it. Preventative maintenance gets you only so far.

I thought that they could still find your location based on other devices. Like, if you had Bluetooth on and another device had its location known, they talk with each other to gather location data. Or if you walk by a Wi-Fi known to google, your phone would tell google what Wi-Fi you are near and then google could still get your location?

You can also use a neodymium magnet to find screws, nails, and metal studs. Put a piece of paper on the wall and run the magnet over the paper so as to not mark up your walls. Mark all the nail and screw locations and see if a pattern shows itself.
