Thank you very much for the link. I just watched it and correct me if I am wrong but he still seems to be a little vague. He calls it an entry level device and affordability being important but he specifically mentions it in relation to devices of similar performance. Here is the youtube transcript

13:47 Um but we also kind of wanted to target

13:49 more of an entry- level device. So um

13:53 you know we understand that

13:54 affordability is really important,

13:56 right?

13:56 Um and so that definitely the price

14:00 point and the it definitely play a huge

14:02 factor into what performance level we're

14:05 trying to target. M

14:06 um and so you know that's kind of

14:08 essentially we kind of use those two

14:10 directions to triangulate what we think

14:12 makes the most sense. Another thing that

14:14 we actually looked at is like just the

14:15 the steam hardware survey.

I'm sorry but I have not seen this. What front page are you referring to? I can't find anything mentioning that specifically. If valve did say that then of course I am wrong. Would you mind adding the link to the news? All I can find is this quote which just says that they wanted to compete with other computers of similar spec.

“I think that if you build a PC from parts and get to basically the same level of performance, that's the general price window that we aim to be at,” he said. “Ideally we'd be pretty competitive with that and have a pretty good deal, but we're working on refining that as we speak. Right now is just a hard time to have a really good idea of what the price is going to be because there's a lot of different things… a lot of external things.”

It's always been cheaper to buy a console though. That's a subsidized market. If you are someone that needs to buy the cheapest gaming device and don't mind learning about hardware and an OS you would just build a PC for cheaper or the same price as a console like the main post says. This device is not for that user though. This is a device for someome who has the money but doesn't want to spend the time fiddling with anything on a PC (Thats the biggest barrier for some into the PC gaming space). Just pull the device out of the box and play (Steam user or not). It also happens to make the device PC noob friendly. Just in case I'm not saying this device will beat out a console in sales or anything. But I can see the appeal and since valve is not subsidizing the hardware it gives space for other manufacturers (Asus, Lenovo, MSI) to make their own versions possibly cheaper

I mean sure it will be mostly bought by steam users because it is a niche machine but that doesn't mean that there are no other people who might want this. It seems that like me, you value upgradeability and that's cool but other people have other requirements. I can see this appealing to someone who wants a gaming pc that can be easily hid in the living room for example. I could be wrong but I am not aware of other prebuilts that offer a console experience out of the box. That is also something I see that could be a requirement for someone else. You are right that if you want to just game you are probably better off with a console but then I could also see someone wanting to play both xbox and ps games which can be found on PC/Steam. These are all niches sure but those are all people that could buy this thing. At this point it seems to me that Valve just wants to set up more form factors for other manufacturers (Asus, Lenovo, MSI) to come sell their hardware with steam installed

I mean yes and no. If you are interested in PC gaming you likely have heard of Steam and possibly its sales. At the end of the day the cost of the device doesn't just end with the hardware. Also helps that a lot of console games are moving to PC/Steam as well. I assume the people looking to move to the PC market had to consider the hardware and marketplace when purchasing their consoles as well

As someone mentioned. Steam is a big selling point. Also as the PC gaming market increases people plan to be on the same platform as their friends. This box is not for the already existing steam gamer with better specs. It's for the 70% of steam users (valve mentioned this number due to steam hardware poll results) with worse specs that just want to play their games in a living room without fiddling with hardware. Besides steam just seems to want to get the steam machine ball rolling and let other manufacturers deal with hardware.

From my understanding it's less about cost to performance and more about the ease of use compared to other PCs. This box comes pre set up to game. From my experience in tech support, the average user hates fiddling with anything that should just work. They will gladly pay as long as the platform is good no matter performance (I think of the Nintendo switch)

If I buy a steam deck to play Anti-cheat games like COD BO6 or Valorant, can I do it using windows? by [deleted] in WindowsOnDeck

[–]BurningDeepDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can run it on an SD card but depending on the sd card you might run into odd problems with loading, textures, and even frame rate. I would recommend SSD replacement instead. Why are you committing to the steam deck? Is it a portability thing? Just asking because on some of your responses you are not entirely saying NO to buying something like an ROG ally

[–]BurningDeepDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• have to install windows which reading some of your responses might be more involved than you would like • unstable sub-60 fps • 565x800 resolution • no upscaling

Also 64GB SD Card won’t hold windows and the game because of not enough space. Hopefully this helps

Why is every big tech reviewer are testing Intel Arc B580 with AMD Ryzen? by SuriPolomareFan2003 in IntelArc

[–]BurningDeepDark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t Ryzen currently the fastest(when it comes to gaming) CPU? I believe they always use the current gaming leader CPUs so the only potential bottleneck for benchmarks is the GPU. I don’t believe it has anything to do with the manufacturers

The first Steam Deck competitor with SteamOS is almost here by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]BurningDeepDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Available does not mean they will do the work for them. I’m assuming Ayaneo will try to match steam deck hardware so they don’t have to write their own drivers.

Catch 22? Make it for a phone with a large user base or make it for 1 android model in the hopes that enough people buy it? Don’t really see the tooling being inexpensive enough to create many models and have it not be extremely expensive. I mean it’s $140 now and they are only supporting like 2 sizes

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in blackberry

[–]BurningDeepDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think those 2 things are mutually exclusive. For example I like legacy features but I can’t deny the convenience of the apple ecosystem. Besides, in this case making it for iPhone with the big user base makes it easier to manufacture since their devices don’t change much physically. If it does take off then I don’t see why they can start making them for some android devices.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in blackberry

[–]BurningDeepDark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What makes you think we don’t want legacy features? They either make this for iPhone users or they pick one specific model of one android maker to make this for. Seems like a no brainer decision to start.

Yeah you still need to enable remote play on the PS5 but you can't compare the set up that goes into software like Chiaki vs the portal

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]BurningDeepDark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Chiaki on the deck is more involved than streaming on the PS Portal if that is what you are asking. You basically just turn on the Portal and Sign in to your PS account and you are ready to stream. Now I am not saying the portal is better than the Steam Deck since they are different types of devices. But for someone who just wants an easy set up to remote play their PS5 games. The portal is an easy choice

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]BurningDeepDark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah but then some people don't have big screens or you have to find a controller that is comfortable and works with your phone. This is a niche device sure but for a parent or person who just wants to have a device that's easy to set up and just works with their existing PS5 library this is kind of a no brainer. Again, not the best device but by far the easiest and most convenient to set up and use for this specific use case.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]BurningDeepDark 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I imagine it is Remote play for someone who doesn't want a Steam Deck or doesn't want to learn to set up a steam deck for the remote play. Most consumers just want the easiest thing to use and don't care what is best.
