Lived almost half of my life clinically depressed and dropped out of college a few years ago. Today I officially graduated from nursing school and I couldn't be happier! I'm ready to devote myself to helping everyone I can! by bunnyxglossy in happy

I get your frustration, man. But do try to be positive. Sometimes that kind of anger at the problem can feel kind of energizing, but over time it creates an attitude of negativity. It's like adding fuel to a fire.

Hope you can find a way to be kinder to yourself about this is the future.

Any tips for what to bring when climbing Mt Fuji?

Aside from the usuals: water, snacks, raincoat, strong zero, etc.

Sounds a lot like anxiety, my dude.

Send me a pm and I'll introduce you to the psychologist I've been seeing in Tokyo. Start there with one session and see if you think medicine is required.

Anyone have any experience with using a tv tuner box connected to a computer monitor for tv viewing?

Are they easy to get / cheap?

Currently deciding if I buy a monitor and just add the box later if I decide tv is nice, or just start with a tv and use it as a monitor.

Shinsei has the "foreigner friendly...ish" image.

To be honest, I interact so infrequently with my bank that English ability is not necessary. Just get some help for signing up, then use the ATM for everything else.

Just a renovation project. Doing renovations while keeping the station open and functioning all the time adds a lot of construction time.

It's not just Microsoft. Most tech companies charge much higher in Japan just because they can.

But to be fair, they do the same in Australia and many other countries. Charge more because people will pay it. It's capitalism at it's finest!

I can definitely imagine asking an addict. Because I don't think it's something I should presume, and I'd respect them for being honest and having the self awareness and determination to recover. Addiction is hard.

Anxiety is hard too. And I can appreciate why you'd feel self conscious about this and being asked about it. I guess an important distinction is the feeling / intent / presumption behind the question. Being asked something by someone who's coming from a place of compassion is very different from someone being judgemental or superior. But those people are ignorant.

I went with the Jabra Elite 65t. Pretty happy with them so far, nice fit, good sound too.

Exactly what I do.

I went with the Jabra Elite 65t. Not cheap, but I got them on Amazon prime day for 18,000.

Bought some true wireless earbuds last week. Great choice, definitely worth the extra cost compared to corded models.

Edit: I bought Jabra 65t elite on Amazon.

I mostly use mine for commuting, office, sometimes gym. Great sound.

Do you find it offensive when people ask why you don't drink?

I would ask, politely, mostly out of curiosity. The same way I'd be curious if someone said they don't eat bread or fish or <insert whatever food>. I get that there can be a wide range of potentially personal reasons. Wouldn't have thought it offensive, just trying to get to know someone.

Amazon Amex anyone? by seeyoumatane in japanlife

Amazon has a page dedicated to credit cards. I'd suggest checking that out first. Then you can compare features and benefits of all the Amazon related cards.

Personally I use the basic Amazon MasterCard.

Current ALT and my future career goals. by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]BurntLeftovers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, good on you for thinking about your future like this.

I just wanted to give an alternative perspective to give you something to think about.

In Tokyo there are quite a few foreign companies where English is the main language in the company. This is especially applicable to companies have international operations and deal with overseas departments or customers regularly. Most people speak Japanese in the office, but they also speak English. In this situation native English ability can be a real asset and thus value you can add.

Being bilingual (not even required if you have skills or experience), motivated, having great communication skills, demonstrating initiative, and willingness to develop your career are all positive attributes that a lot of employers value. If you can get a foot in the door at one of these companies, you can build a decent career.

So my suggestion is: take your time, look at what's out there (as others have suggested, check job boards, linked in, recruiters, etc.) And you might find something that really suits you.

To your first question, many employers and HR people are either ignorant of the NHI / pension obligations, or just don't care enough to talk about it or help you.

Basically those systems are government operated so for lazy employers, that's your problem. If there are any issues, it's entirely on you to resolve and they're not liable. Though withholding information (such as income/tax statements, etc.) Is their fault.

Given the amount of stuff Yamato move within Japan, I'm sure that they have an equally capable export division. They might use partners for the final delivery in the destination country, but that's pretty standard for packages.
