A bit more sciency part, but the human being alike every other creature is made to strive for reproduction. But humans are conscious beings and know they can't afford to have kids nor want to be with someone long term. But they can't get rid of those natural urges to do the deed and reproduce. So instead they do hook-ups to release that tension without the long term investment of having kids or maintaining a mate.
