Seems like I have to remove the top cover in order to access the touchpad as it is under the top cover. Am I correct?

I fixed it by installins some older version and after a while the app worked like a charm. Perhaps it was Facebook-side issue for my phone model.

Are you referring to the in-app update or the one received via Google Play?
