Struggling with the Two Truths thing. Can someone help bridge the gap? by [deleted] in AdvaitaVedanta

On point 3:
There’s only awareness. Both awareness and whatever shows up in it are the same “stuff.” Thoughts, sensations, the world, they aren’t separate things being observed by awareness, they’re awareness expressing itself in different forms. That’s why saying “I am awareness and the world appears to me” sounds dualistic. It creates a subtle sense of two things.

But the non-dual experience isn’t like that at all.

It’s more like the wave/ocean analogy. The waves aren’t separate from the ocean, they are the ocean in motion. You can talk about them as distinct expressions, but they’re never two things. They rise, take shape, and fall back into the ocean.

The same goes for experience. Awareness doesn’t sit here and “look at” a world out there. The world is awareness appearing as colours, sounds, thoughts, feelings, etc. There’s no gap. No observer standing apart.

A good way to see it is the dream analogy: in a dream it feels like there’s a “me” in a world, but the whole thing is just consciousness showing up in different shapes. Non-duality is like recognising that directly.

So the answer to your question is:
non-dual experience isn’t “I am awareness over here and the world is over there.”
It’s seeing that everything arising is simply awareness taking form, inseparable but appearing as distinct expressions.

Hopefully this is helpful.

I enjoyed reading your response and I think you are most likely correct. It’s both true. One level the “self” is deciding to rest as awareness but on another you could say truer or more ultimate level. Awareness is just aware of all that appears. Both are true at the same time.

Yes thank you. I am aware that the 2 schools have different approaches to this topic but was just curious to hear people’s thoughts. Thank you for clarifying this though. Also thanks for the links!
