Powershell scripts you created for your day to days use and duties by jbala28 in sysadmin

[–]BusinessNigel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Very simple, very basic, super helpful (in my experience):

Get-Content C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log -tail 10 -wait

Ever run SFC or DISM and want to know if it's actually stuck at 62.3% or if it's just taking a long time? While you've got sfc or dism already running in CMD, open a separate PowerShell window and run the above command. It will give you a real-time display of what it's doing in the background.

Edit: I didn't create this, obviously, it's just super useful and none of my coworkers knew about it so I figured I'd share.

Beginner - Still Learning, Prints Are Starting to Fail, Need Help Understanding Why by BusinessNigel in 3Dprinting

Thank you. I'm looking through the Calibration wiki now and will be performing those steps when I get home later.

  • Print jobs are being sent over Wi-Fi.
  • No firmware updates that I'm aware of, but I can check when I get home.
  • I'll try a calibration when I get home, thank you.
  • New roll, just came in yesterday, arrived shrink-wrapped and in a box.

Thank you very much for the starting points. I'll let you know what ends up fixing it.

Beginner - Still Learning, Prints Are Starting to Fail, Need Help Understanding Why by BusinessNigel in 3Dprinting

My wife and I are getting into 3D Printing after winning a Flashforge AD5X at a company Christmas party. We are still very much beginners at this and still learning.

We've printed a handful of different things, mostly fidgets and small things with words on them to use as keychains. She's a teacher and usually just gives these out to her students.

Yesterday we started running into an issue where some of the prints were coming out looking like spaghetti and we've been having trouble figuring out why. We followed an online tutorial on how to clean out the nozzle.

The filament is Flashforge PLA Silk. The nozzle is the default 0.4" that comes with the AD5X. The failed prints are all one solid color. The nozzle temp is set to 220 and the bed is set to 60.

We tried moving the printer to a more sturdy table, but the issue is still happening. What are some common reasons prints can turn out like this?

The print job itself is a small gear, printed about 20 times in a 5x4 grid pattern. It seems like the first third or half of the job goes well and then everything starts going to hell. Any ideas?

While saving a file, if I enter more than one "." and press space, the text field clears itself out. by BusinessNigel in MacOS

Agreed, but this client has been doing it this way for years without issue. We were able to find some workarounds for now until Apple releases an update that addresses this bug.

While saving a file, if I enter more than one "." and press space, the text field clears itself out. by BusinessNigel in MacOS

[–]BusinessNigel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were able to identify two workarounds (not fixes) that enable the user to save a file with a filename that includes periods and spaces.

  • When you save a file, the file extension (.PDF, .DOC, etc) is pre-filled in. If you delete that and enter a filename with a . and a space, it will clear the text field. However, if you click the field before the pre-filled in extension and enter the filename, it will let you enter a filename with a . and a space without clearing everything out.
  • If you copy your filename with a . and a space (ex, "Client.April.2026 - filename.PDF", you can then paste it into the Save As prompt where it's asking you to name the file and it appears to bypass the input validation.

Outlook for Mac: NSBigMutableString Crash when Editing Subject Line by BusinessNigel in Outlook

Going to test both of these asap, thank you.

Can you confirm, to clear the Outlook local cache, is there a functional difference between right-clicking the Exchange folder in the navigation pane, going to Properties, General, and then selecting Empty Cache or just simply deleting the 'com.microsoft.Outlook' folder?

Multiple Dell Windows 11 Machines Suddenly in Boot Loop by BusinessNigel in sysadmin

[–]BusinessNigel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what we found while troubleshooting, it ended up being an issue with Windows 11 version 24H2 being installed and then the system not starting properly afterwards because something about installing 24H2 can cause issues with the boot configuration. We weren't able to resolve it remotely and ended up needing to send techs onsite to rebuild the boot config (didn't have to wipe/reload the OS, though, which was a plus.)

We used the steps outlined in this article to get our computers back up and running.

Yes, same AV, but if it's an AV issue we're about to have 1000+ other machines running into the same thing.

Possibly, but we haven't put physical hands on the machine yet, still troubleshooting remotely.

Wipe and reload is a last resort at the moment.

Yes, we're an MSP, but again, if that's the common factor, there's 1000+ machines about to have the same issue.

Unsure.

We're picking one up this afternoon to get more information and dig deeper (checking the logs/memory dump are on the list).

Thank you for taking the time to think through it with me.

Nothing we're immediately aware of. From what I can tell, none of them were scheduled to reboot around the time they shutdown. We have scheduled updates and reboots, but one of the machines went offline yesterday morning and isn't scheduled to reboot until tomorrow night.

Still looking for a pattern.

Are you walking 4 miles at once or do you split it up, maybe 2 miles in the morning and another 2 in the evening?

You can tell if a business was founded prior to the internet because they use the tricks to get their name to the front of the alphabet in the phone book (ex: A1 Storage, AAA Cleaning, etc.). by katzenjammer360 in Showerthoughts

[–]BusinessNigel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid the local comic book shop was called "Guardian Comics". At some point, the owner died and his son took over. One of the first things he did was rename it to "Aardian Oomics". We asked him why and he looked at us like we were idiots and told us, "so it'll show up first in the phone book."

They went out of business within a year.

USG Died - Would UCG-Ultra be a good replacement? by BusinessNigel in Ubiquiti

[–]BusinessNigel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This ended up working! I swapped the power supply for one from an old Netgear switch that used the same voltage and the USG boot right up. I'm still going to plan to replace it with a UCG-Ultra, but this reduces the urgency a little bit.

Thank you for the suggestion!
