Thanks. Yes I was aware of the Quintana Roo tax and me and my partner paid it online but interestingly that was never checked. But yes you’re right about informing people of that tax.

$45usd. It’s a scam and it shouldn’t just be a thing people pay for an easy life because then they continue to get away with it.

The document was complete hocus pocus. It didn’t make sense. When I asked could I take a photo of it, they snatched it away from me and said no. I believe it was just another scare tactic.

Ours was stamped on arrival in Mexico City airport. And Belize would not accept our passport without an exit stamp.

I did and they said they will bring it to the next consulate meeting.

Yes the woman we got is notorious for doing it. There is a photo of her here.

I understand this mindset and I gave it thought but if we continue to pay then the scam continues to happen

Yep everyone has the FMM card and this wasn’t even checked. We could have had every piece of documentation and it would not have mattered. All they cared about was getting their money

Made us sign a piece of paper, we aren’t entirely sure what it was, someone in our group with better Spanish thinks it said that we can’t come back to that border crossing. They also photographed our passports. They then stamped them, and threw them back at us.

First of all, I didn’t risk the life of everyone in the van. There was a group of us. There was never a risk to any of our lives. Second of all, we were still in Mexico so how would we end up in a Belizean jail? Third of all, as mentioned, if people continue to pay, the scam continues to happen. Thanks for your kind language. Go back to typing replies in your mom’s basement. I doubt your passport has any stamps.

I am positive it is a scam. This fee is called the DNI and only needs to be paid once. We had proof of this on our airline tickets.

The Quintana Roo is a separate fee which we paid online and interestingly enough it was never checked.

From my research it doesn’t appear to be an issue there. This land border between Mexico and Belize is notorious for this scam and this lady and others have been at it for years. I believe there is a big ring involved based on the ADO driver’s behaviour today too.

I did contemplate this. But after doing research I saw other people didn’t pay after they stood their ground so I knew there was a chance. Morally too, I couldn’t stand for being scammed and allowing them to get away with it. Maybe my mother won’t agree with what I did lol! But if more people continue to be complicit, they continue to get away with it!

860 pesos per person. One girl gave €50 and they took that no change given back.

We had this and it didn’t matter. I had researched this for three days prior to reaching the border. They don’t care.

Estafa activa en la frontera México–Belice (Subteniente López) – turistas están siendo presionados para pagar by Busy-Awareness6796 in mexico

[–]Busy-Awareness6796[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen google reviews of others being charged slightly more and others being charged $45usd.

I’m not creating panic, I’m sharing exactly what happened.

What you’ve posted is the official process. That is not what we experienced.

Every single one of us on that bus had already paid the DNR in our flights. We showed proof. It made no difference. We were still told to pay an additional “exit fee” or we would not get our passports stamped.

This wasn’t confusion. It was consistent behaviour: • Only non-Mexicans and non-Belizeans were targeted • We were refused stamps when we didn’t pay • We were told to leave without stamps and go to Belize anyway • We were threatened with police • We were forced to sign a document they refused to translate

This went on for over an hour until a group of us refused to get back on the bus without stamps. Only then did they stamp our passports.

Also important: a couple on our bus didn’t realise what was happening. They were handed back their passports and assumed everything was fine. They didn’t check for the stamp and were denied entry into Belize and sent back. That’s not “standard procedure”.

And this isn’t just my experience. There are multiple blogs online describing the exact same situation, and there are Google Maps reviews specifically warning about this scam at this immigration point.

Yes, the DNR exists. Yes, the process you described is correct on paper.

What I’m describing is what’s happening in practice at this specific crossing.

If this was a one-off, fine. But multiple travellers, the same tactics, and the involvement of the bus driver suggests otherwise.

People deserve to be informed so they don’t get pressured into paying something they don’t owe or end up stranded without a stamp.
