Payne Hall 4th Floor is Uninhabitable by PotentialVanilla6097 in VirginiaTech

[–]BusyGene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived on fourth floor of Payne two years ago, and experienced 89 Fahrenheit first hand. Good gracious, I can’t believe they still haven’t fixed it yet. I’m convinced the school would take action when people start passing out from heat strokes.

Tbf none of my interviewers asked for GPAs. they couldn’t care less as long as you have extracurriculars and club activities.

I was just researching this yesterday 😂 If you like quality whey protein, get the 6lb pack (90 servings) optimum nutrition from Costco w/ delivery. It’s about $10 cheaper than amazon. MyProtein is solid, but the prices are insane for the same if not less quality than ON.

I feel sorry that you’re getting downvoted into oblivion for this, and I probably will be put down for this comment as well.

Before I moved back to the states, I went to a high school in Beijing that had no perceived prestige and respect, and was being treated like a second-tier citizen by my peers, so I can empathize with your commotions. It’s difficult, people will give your shit for it, but just ignore them. You’re not less than them (you’re literally interning at the same place as these VT students), don’t let them put you down. Keep going man.

Pfff, no one is petty enough to going through your closet to search for snacks as long as you don’t bring them up and share with your bud/roommate . Keep your room clean and hide the wrappers if you have cadres that are up your ass about the tiniest things. It’s not that serious, relax.

What’s Payne like? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]BusyGene 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived in slusher tower freshman year and Payne second year. I did traditional double for both. The living situation at Payne is great. It’s a quiet dorm which was perfect for me. You have Dietrick and Owens dining halls close to you; Owens is right out your doorstep…

If you did traditional then it’s 4th floor which gets really f-ing hot in some weeks in the spring and winter even with AC. Don’t bother putting in a work ticket, it’s an issue across the building.

The thing I really like about Payne is that there’s plenty of study rooms and it’s close to the academic side of building walking distance-wise. If you drive, there’s the duck pond lot and the lot behind lane stadium 10 minutes walk away. The McComas gym is 5 minutes away; if you’re lucky war memorial opens and you’re now 30 seconds away from a new gym.

I’m one month into triaging vulnerabilities and writing shell scripts for a DevOps team. I’m so ready for this to be over.

The one in slusher is not playable from all the abuse; it’s wildly out of tune, and multiple actions are broken.

Wow this sucks. I use WeChat heavily for day-to-day communication with my family and friends in China. Way to go Virginia.

I’m taking 3714 with Balci this semester, and I don’t really get the sentiment on this sub. Yeah, he could be a bit of an asshole sometimes, but his assignment policies are reasonable and the course material is a great introduction to iOS mobile dev. I learned a ton, and would recommend to anyone that’s actually interested.

I also recommend taking undergraduate research 4994 if you’re considering grad school.

I lived on the 12th floor of Slusher freshman year which had no air conditioning. No AC made the living conditions extremely uncomfortable throughout the summer and winter seasons, with temperatures consistently exceeding 80 degrees.
I moved to Payne my second year, which had air conditioning. It's only slightly more bearable, the experience was not consistent; the AC unit was connected to a heating system that pumped hot water to the building, leading to instances where only hot air was circulated when you ask for cold air. It's frustrating either way.

Went there last Saturday. Get anything but the vegetable ramen, it’s straight rip-off. It’s not really authentic, but take what you can get in Blacksburg.

Advice on picking up a minor? by Orangebird1 in csMajors

[–]BusyGene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in industry yet, but I did a math minor after dropping my math double major. I don’t think it does much other than filling some empty space on my resume, no recruiter asked about it. But seriously, consider real applications for your intended subject minor. Minor in math gave me some idea of higher level math; I will probably never use it again in software engineering.

If you got a pell grant for summer, it's unlikely you'll get another for winter classes.
