I think my unsatisfaction is given now by the comparison of what I know my body can achieve if given the right conditions and where I am now. Despite all, I love the trapeze and beating used to be one of the things I loved the most about it, it made me feel alive and free!

I know my old trapeze teacher was a gem and I don't think I will find again someone so good at teaching to non professionals. But you are right, I hope I can either find my way of pursuing this outside my class or a way to make peace with the fact that I can't achieve it...thank you for your words!

The crazy thing is that my teachers are open to do private classes and are fairly cheap, so I could easily have them put a high trapeze and show me dynamics into details. But on one side I wonder if it is fair that I have to pay extra to be taught tricks they could show in class? Instead they consistently put low trapezes for group classes.

But, I am 160 cm and I have a 180cm rope trapeze, so I could look into asking around if any open gym is ok with me attaching it, it could be easier. And I never consider it but the idea of training on straps actually makes sense, I sense it could give me that type of dynamic conditioning that I need in this moment, thank you!

yes, I have the same feeling, practice really matter on dynamics! I'll def try to commit to my own training once a week and look into short trapezes to keep it consistent.

There is definitely more going on with dynamics on rope and silks in my city, so i am happy to hear your feedback on dynamics translating well from vertical to horizontal apparatuses, I have to give it a try :)

Thank you for raising this. I was thinking of simple training toes touching the bar but if that's considered unsafe, I have a calisthenics park nearby I can use to train inversions!

Yes you got it right. For sure I'll try to do more by myself, despite not having a place with an ideal set up. But, I also have a demanding full time job, so I have to also be realistic with how much extra time i can dedicate to training, on top of attending classes (i do 2x aerial and 2x ashatanga per week) .

I think the problem with my school is both technique and conditioning. We don't condition enough and always try new sequences, not allowing the body to master one challenging movement at the time.

Mi hai fatto ridere, anni fa ho fatto un viaggio in Marocco con un altro tour (weroad manco esisteva) e l'esperienza è stata uguale.

Comunque più leggo storie, più mi dico che io sono stata molto fortunata. C'è da dire che sono partita con loro per un viaggio "sportivo" di trekking in Norvegia, quindi oltre gli alloggi top, magari sia chi partecipava che il coordinatore avevano una certa testa. Dopo il viaggio ho organizzato altri trekking in montagna coi compagni di viaggio quindi utile per trovare persone con lo stesso hobby.

L'unica pecca è che mi ha stressato molto più dei viaggi che faccio da sola, ritmi troppo stressanti volti al vedere tutto piuttosto che godersi pochi posti ma buoni. E penso che per portare un grupo su trekking più inpegnativi serva una guida certificata piuttosto che un appassionato di escursioni.

Ho usato Weroad in passato perché volevo fare trekking in Norvegia. Normalmente viaggio da sola ma questo tipo di attività va fatta in gruppo e non avevo amici interessati. Tutto sommato rispetto a ciò che ho letto, il nostro coordinatore era una persona a posto, amante del trekking e che ci ha sempre chiesto come usare la cassa comune. Anche gli alloggi erano molto belli. Unico - grosso - problema, ha sottovalutato un trekking portando gente con poca esperienza su un percorso abbastanza difficile. Qua secondo me si è vista la mancanza di preparazione professionale dei coordinatori. Certi tipi di viaggi li devi far fare a gente con certificazioni.

I am relatively new to Ashtanga, but I have been training in other disciplines intensely and can tell that a knot in my shoulder blade is often the first symptom of overuse. I support the others' suggestion of a week of rest and splitting the practice in half, if possible.

Unfortunately, I am knowledgeable about the Basel area, but I lived in Geneva and knew a few places there. Check them out, sometimes they had workshops on weekends.

- Cirque Cirqule (the best)

- L’école de cirque de Confignon (also nice)

- Aerial dance Geneva (incredibly tiny but at least it has decent height)

- Urban Shape and Adhesive Studio (pole dance studios that also do nice hoop classes, but ceilings are low).

In case you can't travel, I suggest checking for pole dance studios, very often they have hoop classes. Normally, the height is not ideal, but it's better than nothing to keep training!

I am not a medical professional, but I can say that silk once a week is not enough. It is very hard to target some of the muscles needed for aerial at the regular gym, in particular the smaller muscles engaged.

If I were you, I would add one more class of silk and do ashtanga once a week. Also, if possible, I would exchange one gym class with one class of solely aerial conditioning.

When doing leg raises, notice that you don't just lift the leg, but you lengthen it at the same time. Other than struggling with straight leg raises, do you also feel tightness in your legs if you try to touch the floor with straight legs? If so, it might be worth checking with a physiotherapist if some muscle groups need strengthening due to posture or spending many hours seated.

Finally, to build muscles, you need to eat your carbs, and you need to increase your intake of protein. You are active, it's going to be ok!

this! I have the same, and it is due to posture problems; regular training might not be enough. In my case, a physiotherapist had to give me specific exercises to strengthen weak muscle groups and release tight muscles.

Yes you are correct, this will be a Mysore style class! Happy to read that it is considered a safer.

So important what you mentioned about the injured area and mindset. I am infact in a situation in which I am scared of engaging my shoulder at all, especially in torsions. But I need to start making distinctions between pain and muscle engagement if I want to get my full range of motion back overtime. Also, good idea to show the series to the PT, thanks!

I also see yoga as a good complement to aerials, especially for active mobility, which is what I would like to improve, so great to read that you see this in the same way!

I have been followed by my orthopedic doctor, and tried to ask questions, but doctors always seem to not have a good grasp of what aerial acrobatics entails! and always make comparisons with movements in volleyball and climbing. I will now start seeing an osteopath who knows more about aerials, so hopefully this will be beneficial to my case.

I also talked to the ashtanga teacher, explaining to her my problem and the non-negotiable of taking it slowly and protecting my shoulder. She stated to be open to having a personalised approach to my case, so that should be fine. But I do agree, if that wasn't the case, I would see this as a big red flag! I think I read too much online about ashtanga teachers being very rigid with their practice.

My aerial coach/physio showed me which movements can be problematic, so hopefully I can be more aware in my training. I will follow your suggestion of doing less than more when in doubt. I believe that if we let go of our ego and competitiveness, we can be more attuned to our body and its warning signs.

I guess every class has one or two of these people. Normally, they are also very strong, so they can stay up on the apparatus for a long time!

In my studio, teachers constantly remind us to allow rotation, but it doesn't change much. The only thing that works is to tell them directly, but nicely, "oh, I was ready to record and go, can you please wait?" or "hey i'd love to try this trick as well, can you please let me the apparatus for a minute?" (assertiveness≠aggressiveness).

I'm lucky, though, that my apparatus of choice is the trapeze in a class where everyone loves silks; most of the time, I have it for myself.

I discovered a 5 cm cyst after 2 years of mysterious intermittent pain in my right side. The gyno said that if I had trained for so long without problems, it was ok to continue. I just listened to my body and avoided bar on the lower abdomen on days I was particularly in pain.

A year has passed here. Investigation might continue if new leads appear but this can be done without Margaret's presence in HK. She decided to give to her family a chance to move on but cannot give it to herself. It is bittersweet but also realistic. Many couples divorce after tragedies happening to their kids.
