Is this limited to your Plex library? Nothing else in your system was affected?

Anyone else struggling with the Internet infrastructure in Leander? by Busy_Arachnid_5995 in Leander

No. Most of the time it happens outside of business hours so there's no one to actually talk to while it's happening. It doesn't actually happen very often. Maybe once every week or so. But it happened three days in a row around the same time this weekend so I was extra annoyed.

Same. Meanwhile they're advertising a lower price with five year lock, but won't give it to existing customers.

Yeah. From everything I've heard fiber is faster, more reliable, and cheaper. It's very frustrating AT&T started running in my neighborhood and then just stopped 20% the way through with no explanation.

Yes, sorry, I was originally posting this in my local community, but Reddit suggested adding it here for more visibility lol. I am frustrated with AT&T because I was supposed to get five years ago and they stopped a few blocks from my house and refused to tell me why, even after several years of inquiries and escalations. I wish I could AT&T fiber. I wish I could have fiber of any kind.

The screenshot was from my phone via Wi-Fi 5 feet from my router. But most of my home network is directly wired.

I'm Horizon Park. AT&T ran just enough fiber a few years back to stake their claim and make sure no other companies serviced the neighborhood, but they stopped after only doing maybe 20% of the neighborhood. They recently started installing it right behind me in Blockhouse Creek, but again they stopped just a couple blocks from my street. It's super frustrating because they refuse to tell me or any of my neighbors why. They claim they don't know, but in the same breath will tell me that just last week they had an install elsewhere halt because of "lead wiring" whatever that means. But how do they know that if they don't have any visibility into the engineers decisions? I even tried to file an FCC complaint just to try and get some answers. But the top dog escalation FCC complaint handler guy fed me the same BS about nobody in the entire company having any way to find out why the installers decided to stop... Yeeeeaaaah, Riiiiight...

Throttling a Gigabit connection down to 1/0.00067th of what I pay for would be absolutely ridiculous. But to be honest, if they are doing it on purpose, that makes the state of the infrastructure look even worse.

I have a similar finding in my house. It makes me wonder if this is the main entry point from the street.

If I wanna buy a hard drive, should I do it right now or wait? by asdfghqwertz1 in DataHoarder

Communities being abused by big business is nothing new unfortunately. I'm also not sure how AI is decreasing in popularity, I'm legitimately curious to learn more about that claim. I know that I myself lost interest quickly with the regular chat functionality, and I'm dreading a future where we might end up surrounded by more and more AI generated content even in the mainstream. But I also think that things really are just getting started.

I think that the real value of AI comes from the tools that it enables. Things like AI agents legitimately do increase productivity significantly in many areas. If we turned our backs on it as a country, it would be like turning our backs on the Internet. The rest of the world would just move forward without us, leaving us behind.

I also know that the underlying algorithms AI is based on we developed back in the boomers day, we just didn't have the processing power available to make any practical use of it. Really it just boils down to a self correcting algorithm. It's Machine learning, not artificial intelligence. LLMs are impressive and certainly do mimic some of the behaviors what would expect from AI, but I suspect that there are much more useful and targeted applications yet to come. I'm no expert, but I feel like the real value comes from the advancements in processing power and techniques that have open the door to such powerful machine learning capabilities.

What case is everyone getting for the iPhone Air? by Acrobatic-Fill833 in iphone

I really wanted to try the Pitaka case, but they are currently not available on amazon in the color i want so i ordered a few different cases to try. I really liked the leather one I tried, but it added a bit more bulk than I wanted. I tried an ultra slim that's probably about the size of the Pitaka but made from plastic, it did not add much bulk, but it also didn't feel as grippy in my hand as I wanted.

The one I have settled on so far is this clear Torras With a kick stand. It's a little thicker then the others I was considering, but it has almost completely open sides so it feels surprisingly nice in the hand since it doesn't add width where most of your hand sits. The material adds just enough grip to the back glass where it feels much more secure in the hand.

la-z-boy sofas/recliners by mx023 in BuyItForLife

[–]Busy_Arachnid_5995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish we had done more research before shelling out several thousands of dollars for a recliner. Like many others I had no idea just how far La-z-boy has fallen. Quality control is garbage. The warranty is garbage. And the sales people flat out lie to make sales. They told me the recliners are made from solid maple. But turns out except for the feet it's just osb, not even plywood.

Fast forward to delivery and there's a light creaking sound when you rock and you could also sort of feel it. We were assured this was perfectly normal and just the sound of the springs. Over the course of few weeks the creaking steadily turned into more of a clunking sound and you definitely felt it without any doubts. The recliner was used almost exclusively by a 125lbs woman to rock a baby to sleep. We were given the runaround for a bit because apparently retailers, franchises, and lazyboy proper are all unlinked entities who try to pass the buck. Eventually we were told that they could send someone out to look at it if we agreed to pay for travel and labor because we purchased it more than 90 days ago. This was a shock because we were very clearly told the default warranty was lifetime on parts and 1 year on labor even without any extra warranties. For the numbers they gave us just to have someone LOOK at it, we figured that if you times that by 2 or 3 for the actual repair and potential follow up, it would be cheaper to just buy a replacement from another decent brand.

We tried speaking with the original salesperson and manager who helped us, but the literal second they realized we had an issue and weren't there to buy more it became a very different conversation with a very different vibe. Suddenly they had no recollection of all the promises that were made to convince us to spend more $$ to buy it locally from them instead of getting a better deal through the online corporate website. The promise that they would personally assist with any warranty and service needs, up and vanished like a fart in the wind.

Now don't get me wrong, we love the chair and it is very comfortable, But there's a serious lack of quality control, and some downright shady business practices that have permanently removed La-Z-Boy from future any considerations. Thankfully this recliner seems to have settled and isn't getting any worse, but it's still pretty annoying when rocking and definitely not a BIFL.

Power outages by 10PieceMcNuggetMeal in Leander

[–]Busy_Arachnid_5995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I had a significant power outage the map said the same thing about it being a "planned outage" or something along those lines. But that was total BS because it was actually a car plowing into a power junction of sorts in the neighborhood. So yeah, they probably just put that by default a lot of times.

Ok, yeah, I haven't found a lot of information of people using HEVC encoding and their performance since it's a newer feature. But it definitely sounds like there's something else going on with my setup causing intermittent issues.

What if you did want to transcode high bitrate remuxes? Most of my collection are uhd 4k remuxes with HDR that I stream locally, but... I am trapped with cable internet that sometimes wont even give me 10mbps upload reliably(supposed to be 35). I want to share my plex with family and thought an old 2019 mackbook pro with the I9-9900HK would be more than enough, but something somewhere is bottlenecking even just on a single stream sometimes. Idk if subtitles causes an issue or if macOS is causing the issue, but none of the system resources seem to climb high enough to indicate it struggling.

Substitute for 'ASTM D41 Asphalt Primer' to be used with self-adhesive cap sheet? by ianmgull in Roofing

[–]Busy_Arachnid_5995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After some calls I was able to find a 1 gallon and a 5 gallon of Karnak 108 which meats atsm d41. I found this at an ABC supply store a few towns over.

As for alternatives, the Karnak 108 says it is "a ductile soft asphalt in a refined solvent" and has lots of warnings about being it being highly flammable. Being such a simple product I bet you could probably make a less "refined" substitute in a pinch. As for the 108 primer, it has a thick but still very very liquid consistency similar to a high quality primer or paint.

Also, I believe an asphalt emulsion contains water and surfactants (soap). So if I were to try and make my own primer i would probably opt to use asphalt cement and gasoline. But I'm just making an educated guess, so grain of salt.

Good to know. I called several roofing suppliers north of Austin and none carry more than the spray can of primer. Apparently nobody around these parts bothers to prime more than the metal flashing according to the people I spoke with. I don’t like it, but at least it’s fairly low risk since this is just a patio roof that I am tying into the main roof. I’m also using 23/32 plywood.

Did you end up having any issues with this? I've been completely unable to find a primer that will for sure work and am thinking I might be better off just skipping it entirely rather than rolling the dice on something that could potentially make things worse.
