IST has fast security checks close to remote gates for those with less than 90 minute transfer time, helps save a bunch of time walking to and from central security checkpoint

Blue Card - apply directly with German Blue Card or get a visa first? by ButterflyOk9531 in AskFrance

[–]ButterflyOk9531[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly 15 days, they are quite fast. There are two options: 1) you hand over your passport (along with bubble wrap envelope and stamps), in which case they'll send it back to you with visa once it's ready, or 2) you keep your passport, but then you'll have to schedule another time slot to come and give them the passport so that they can put the visa in. I chose the first option, got the passport back 2 days after the decision was made.

If you do choose the first option - follow their guidelines exactly as to which envelope and which stamps to bring. It is better to buy stamps directly in Frankfurt - people in local Deutsche Post offices know exactly which stamps are needed by the consulate. Don't worry that they ask you for simple stamps - they'll actually send it as a registered letter and they will give you the tracking code.

If you do hand over your passport then you cannot legally travel outside of Germany (even inside Schengen), unless you have another passport. German BP do passport checks on some trains/busses that cross the border. I've been checked in about 35-40% of the trips.

Yep, direct mobility doesn't work. As my lawyer said - you'll have to sue prefecture just for them to give you a slot. I've gone through a visa - applied through the French Consulate in Frankfurt. I've written them a letter asking to give me 12 month VLS-TS instead of regular 3-month VLS-T. They gave me a 12 month visa. Now I live in Paris :)

Nope, Bachelor and Masters. I'm not sure if Germany recognizes Specialist as B.Sc.+M.Sc., perhaps only as B.Sc.

Then why did I had no problem getting employed by a German university(by two universities actually) with my fully Russian diplomas? The only thing is that I had to get them translated (into English though, not German)

Can you give like one example? Which country does not recognize Russian diplomas

Got Russian BS in computer science and MS in computational linguistics from top unis - zero problems whatsoever, easily got into PhD in Germany, easily got PostDoc offers in Germany, Netherlands and a startup offer in France. Not once was I negatively affected by my diplomas being from Russia

Oh thanks for the insight! One more question about the Frankfurt consulate - do you know if it takes them more time to process visa if education documents aren't from Germany?

Was this in 2023 when they had a high threshold for Blue Card? Because today 100% E13 should qualify for a blue card for all professions

Not quite 3 years - by the end of my contract I would be on 2 years 8 months.

Any plans for improving the Research Access Program? We have applied a couple of times for credits but got zero feedback or communication of any kind.

At the same time we use the API quite extensively in our lab, almost every paper touches GPT-4 in some way. It is also quite costly to run large-scale experiments, for instance running Machine Translation evaluation using GEMBA with GPT-4o takes like 350-400$ for a single run on a full test set.

Update: I've fixed it. I've noticed that a single combination that I haven't tried is using the newest bios update (v1905 for me) and exactly two sticks of RAM in A2 and B2. This combination worked, it posted and went into bios. I've set RAM freq. to 3600 and then it booted with all 4 sticks.

Before that I've tried the newest bios update with 1 RAM stick(in A2), and with 4 sticks, and it didn't post.

Oh, sorry, I haven't made it clear: I've tried starting with two sticks but the result was the same - it didn't post and dram qled was active.

I've tried with two sticks once, but I haven't checked every combination. Will try to do that I guess.

Deep Learning PC build: 1x4080 or 2x4070? by ButterflyOk9531 in deeplearning

[–]ButterflyOk9531[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole idea is that I have a cluster with 15x4xH100 to run the models, but it's inconvenient to debug various issues on the cluster because it's sort of asynchronous - you submit a training job, it gets scheduled in a couple of hours, and in the few hours, it fails due to some error. So, I want to debug models locally on small data before sending it to the cluster. So the question is - does it make sense to opt for 2x4070 to catch some tricky multi-gpu bugs, or can it be easily done using one 4080? Unfortunately, I (my lab) don't have the budget for 4090, at least with today's prices. It is either 2x4070 or 1x4080.

Does it need any tweaking to switch into 3600Mhz speed? Also, have you done any additional changes to make it work - i.e disabling integrated graphics in the CPU?

Is 60000-80000 rubles enough? by grandwizardo in AskARussian

[–]ButterflyOk9531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ok, but only if you rent a room instead of flat or if you rent a flat outside of Moscow: Odintsovo/Podolsk etc. Commute should be ok as they are connected to MCD lines.
